The Mandalorian Season 2 trailer revealed a new mystery character played by WWE star Sasha Banks. Is she playing a familiar name?

On Tuesday, Disney and Lucasfilm released the teaser trailer for The Mandalorian season 2, the hit Disney+ show that became a global phenomenon last year. The trailer was met with an outcry of excitement, obviously, but the little teaser has also raised questions about what will unfold in the second season.

One big question that remains unanswered as of right now: Who is that mystery character lurking under a black hood in the marketplace backdrop?

First off, we at least know who is playing the character: famous WWE wrestler Sasha Banks. Back in February, Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet reported on Banks’ involvement in season 2, although many casting rumors for the upcoming season have been relatively unconfirmed.

With Banks’ appearance in the trailer, it shows that her character will play some role along the way. But who is she exactly, and whose side is she on?

Is Sasha Banks playing a Jedi in The Mandalorian season 2?

Taking context clues into account, we can make an educated guess that Sasha Banks will play a Jedi. The opening of the teaser trailer features the exchange from season 1’s finale where Emily Swallow’s character, The Armorer, tells Mando that he must reunite The Child “with its own kind.”

The Armorer goes on to say, “The songs of eons past tell of battles between Mandalore the Great and an order of sorcerers called Jedi.” Immediately after that line, the trailer cuts sharply to the mystery character played by Sasha Banks, lurking ominously while shielded by foot traffic of the nearby crowd.

The voiceover from season 1’s finale doesn’t stop there, as Din Djarin asks The Armorer, “You expect me to search the galaxy and deliver this creature to a race of enemy sorcerers?” Then Banks’ character vanishes out of thin air before The Armorer replies, “This is the way.”

The careful way that this trailer is composed, accompanied with the season 1 exchange, seems to indicate that Banks is, in fact, a Jedi. But, trailers for highly anticipated media projects are also a breeding ground for misdirections and editing shenanigans. After all, The Child wasn’t part of any trailers in the lead up to season 1 last year in order to maximize his big reveal at the end of Chapter 1.

It’s possible that Disney wants fans to think Banks is a Jedi, just for her character to turn out to be someone else entirely. Speaking of that…

Could Sasha Banks play a live-action Sabine Wren?

Putting the trailer’s context aside, there’s another possibility that Banks’ character is actually a live-action version of Rebels‘ Sabine Wren. Sabine’s arrival on The Mandalorian has long been anticipated since she is also a Mandalorian and her whereabouts after Rebels are unknown.

Rumors from May even state that Wren is expected to appear in Season 2, although they are largely unconfirmed.

Sabine’s appearance in the upcoming season makes a lot of sense, especially given that the Darksaber was unveiled in the Season 1 finale. The infamous saber first seen in The Clone Wars was wielded by Wren for a bit of time before she passed it off to Bo-Katan Kryze, a fellow Mandalorian who is also rumored to be appearing in Season 2.

It’s likely that the upcoming season will explore how Moff Gideon, the current owner of the Darksaber, came into its possession. This opens the door for the involvement of both Bo-Katan and Sabine. Perhaps a flashback will show how Gideon took the saber from Bo-Katan, and a present-day Sabine will aim to win it back on her own or with the help of Kryze.

Will Sasha Banks’ Mandalorian character simply be someone sinister?

It’s also entirely possible that Banks’ character is someone with bad intentions. That would only add to the immediate danger for Mando and The Child as the larger threat of Moff Gideon lurks in the background of Season 2.

Banks and Mandalorian co-star Gina Carano previously sparred on Twitter this summer, raising questions about if the two will face off in the upcoming season given the rumors of Banks’ casting.

The trailer only offers a brief glimpse at Banks’ character, so it’s hard to make a judgment on whose side she’s on. However, the mystery of who she is only builds up the intrigue of Season 2.
