Patty Jenkins reveals how far along production on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is
Having been confirmed as the director of the next Star Wars theatrical release, Patty Jenkins had a few words to share about her upcoming project.
Among the cavalcade of announcements that came from the most recent Disney Investor Day was the confirmation of who will be directing the next Star Wars feature film. That name was revealed to be Patty Jenkins, of Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 fame. With that news now out in the open, Jenkins is now free to talk about her upcoming Star Wars project, titled Star Wars: Rogue Squadron — or, as much as the watertight Lucasfilm NDA’s will allow.
Speaking during a Wonder Woman 1984 press day, ahead of its release, Collider’s Steven Weintraub managed to eek a morsel of information from Jenkins about the background of the film.
While she was reluctant to name who she has been writing the film’s treatment with, on the basis that she “[wants] him to have his own proper announcement.” Jenkins did indicate that the project was relatively into the writing process. Elaborating, Jenkins said:
"We’re very far into the — we’re finishing the treatment basically, which is pretty big. So it ends up being like where you’re fairly close to a well-along screenplay by the time I’m done with the treatment in my process. So yeah, we’ve been working on it for a while."
You may recall a report from The Hollywood Reporter in December of last year that said the next theatrical release had a director in place, which was to be publicly announced in January 2020. For whatever reason, that didn’t come to be. However, with this in mind, and the comments made by Patty Jenkins here, it’s fair to assume that she was the name alluded to in that report.
In regards to Rogue Squadron itself, details are, naturally, scarce. In a video posted to her Twitter account, Jenkins shared the personal angle the film will have while expressing her desire to make “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.”
With a loose December 2023 release date in place, we’ll have to wait a little longer to see if she can make good on that aspiration.
