Out of all the iconic Star Wars characters who have deserved spinoffs, fans have rallied for Boba Fett for a long time. The fan-favorite bounty hunter has been portrayed by multiple actors over the years, including the late Jeremy Bulloch in the original series, who sadly passed away this week. Compared to other supporting characters throughout the films, Boba’s backstory is one of the most intriguing and still a bit mysterious.
*Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 2 finale.*
It had been rumored that a TV series via Disney Plus was in the works for Boba Fett, and fans were surprised to see that Disney’s Investor Day earlier this month didn’t announce it. Considering reports were coming out that the show was set to begin filming, we really didn’t know what to believe. Fett was, of course, brought back for season 2 of The Mandalorian, adding fuel to the fire.
His appearance was no doubt setting up a spinoff series, right? So then why not just announce it already?
Well, good news, everyone! If you watched The Mandalorian season 2 finale today, you’ll know that the Boba series is indeed a go, and it’s titled The Book of Boba Fett. Similarly to many Disney live-action productions, the finale included a post-credits scene, which was all about the bounty hunter.
The Mandalorian season 2 post-credits explained
After some of the credits rolled, we were taken to Tatoonie, where Bib Fortuna sat on the throne. Fans will remember that Bib Fortuna was formerly under Jabba the Hutt’s rule, but after he died, Bib took over. After getting a few moments of Bib speaking Huttese, gunshots were fired, and in came Boba Fett and Fennec Shand.
Fennec began shooting everyone, with the exception of letting a chained up Twi’lek go, and when Boba entered the room, Bib Fortuna was visibly surprised to see him. “Boba! I thought you were dead. I am so glad to see you,” he called out. Before he could keep talking much longer, however, Boba shot him, threw his lifeless body off the throne, and sat down. Power moves only!
This is Boba and Fennec‘s home now, and based on the announcement of the spinoff series, we’re likely to find out what happens next for the two characters soon.
The Book of Boba Fett release date
The post-credits scene then revealed that The Book of Boba Fett would be hitting Disney Plus in December 2021.
Considering The Mandalorian season 3 is coming out around Christmas of next year, we can speculate that the Boba series will premiere in early December. We’ll let you know when the series has an exact release date.
While speaking to The New York Times earlier this month, Boba actor Temuera Morrison weighed in on the possibility of his own spinoff show. Understandably tight-lipped, he seemed hopeful about the idea, but his answer was pretty disappointing for fans wanting to know more. Morrison stated:
"I’m just going to have to wait and see. I think a lot of it depends on how things go with this season, but I don’t really know. I wanted to bring everything I had to that [episode] and give them a glimmer of what I can offer. There’s room for this to go someplace. I hope I’m going to be included."
Well, the cat’s out of the bag now! Expect to see Boba Fett back and hopefully better than ever in a year’s time.
