It’s award season again for all of our favorite TV shows and movies, and The Mandalorian has snagged yet another major nomination: Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series at the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Announced today, Feb. 4, this was the only nomination for the show at this year’s SAG awards, snubbing the show in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category. This comes as a surprise as The Mandalorian has been nominated for the best drama award in almost all of the other major television awards, including the last year’s Emmys, this year’s Golden Globes Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
The popular Disney+ show has a great chance of taking the SAG stunt category, as they have been nominated in a similar field before. At last year’s Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, The Mandalorian won the Emmy for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited Series or Movie.
Up against them at this year’s SAG Awards in the stunt category, though, are other popular shows featuring some stunts arguably just as impressive, including: The Boys, Cobra Kai, Lovecraft Country, and Westworld. With the immense popularity of The Mandalorian and the fact that the show continues to improve and get bigger with each season, there’s a high possibility that the show takes this category as well.
Much of the credit for this nomination goes to Ryan Watson, the stunt coordinator for the show. While leading-man Pedro Pascal has many body doubles who are credited for performing his stunts, series villain Giancarlo Esposito has actually said in the past that he did all of his own stunts for season 2 of The Mandalorian, according to an interview with Collider.
The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards takes place on Sunday, April 4, so we will have to wait until then to see if The Mandalorian takes home yet another major award.
