Early this morning, the nominations for the 2021 Golden Globes went out. These nominations covered TV and movies that came out last year, and so of course, that made The Mandalorian season 2 eligible for nominations.

Last year, the series wasn’t nominated for any Golden Globes awards. But it did surprise many people to find out later that The Mandalorian season 1 would go on to be nominated for 15 Emmys. And when it was all said and done, the series took home a grand total of seven Emmys for that awards season. So, the Emmys call last year might have had some impact on the Golden Globes’ decision this year — because the show was nominated!

Today, it was announced that The Mandalorian is up for one Golden Globe. And that’s for Best Television Series – Drama. It’s an exciting nomination to get, but there’s definitely some tough competition. Here’s the full list of nominees:

Best Television Series – Drama

The Crown (Netflix)

Lovecraft Country (HBO Max)

The Mandalorian (Disney Plus)

Ozark (Netflix)

Ratched  (Netflix)

Can The Mandalorian win a Golden Globe?

More from The Mandalorian

Based on the stiff competition this year, it’s hard to say that The Mandalorian will be able to be ahead of the competition this year. And we can judge that based on last year’s Emmy nominations.

The Mandalorian did get a nomination for a similar award at the Emmys, Outstanding Drama Series, which is really one of the “big ones.” But unfortunately for Lucasfilm, that wasn’t one of the seven Emmys the show took home.

The competition that year was just too stiff as well. It was nominated again alongside Ozark and The Crown, but Succession ended up winning that year.

The Golden Globes have always been a tricky awards show with some out-there nominations from time to time. But we’re sure when it comes to this year’s Emmys, we’ll see a lot more nominations than what we’ve seen today.

Still, that’s not to downplay The Mandalorian’s nomination at all. While it would be nice to see another nomination, such as an acting nom for Pedro Pascal, it’s an incredible honor just for the series to be recognized — and that’s especially considering The Mandalorian got no love from the Globes last year.

More Star Wars Golden Globes love

Additionally, two Star Wars actors were nominated for Golden Globes this year. Sequel trilogy actor John Boyega is up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for a limited series thanks to his great performance in Small AxeAdditionally, Rogue One actor Riz Ahmed is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in Sound of Metal. Plus, The Mandalorian composer Ludwig Göransson is nominated for Best Original Score for the Warner Bros. movie Tenet. We’re wishing the best to all the nominees!
