The Mandalorian remains one of the most popular series on the Disney+ network. However, it appears that a new Marvel Cinematic Universe show has now taken over a top spot among the platform’s most popular series.

In a press release from Disney+ Media Relations, the company revealed that the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, a new series surrounding the eponymous Marvel Studios characters, has become the most-watched series premiere on Disney+. The show overtook the premiere viewership numbers of both The Mandalorian and another popular Marvel miniseries, WandaVision, during its opening this past weekend.

The trio of shows now make up the three most-watched Disney+ opening weekends to date, according to the press release. As TheDirect.com noted, with Marvel Studios now having two of the top three debut shows on the platform, the MCU looks poised to have a “flying start” when it comes to stream-based programming.

Given that Disney+ is only 16 months old, the fact that Marvel Studios has been so successful with their content is something that the Walt Disney Corporation is likely very content with, especially given the theatrical success of MCU movies like Avengers: Endgame.

However, it should be noted that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is likely not going anywhere soon, at least when it comes to the streaming wars. While a new Star Wars film isn’t slated to release until 2023, there is still more content coming to a galaxy far, far away. The Book of Boba Fett is scheduled to debut on Disney+ at the end of this year, and season 3 of The Mandalorian will likely begin streaming in 2022.

Other spinoff shows, such as Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic are also slated to release in the near future. With all of these shows coming up, it is definitely a great time to be a Star Wars fan. So while Marvel may hold the streaming title now, there will be more Star Wars content sooner rather than later to compete for the top spot.
