With the first wave of Star Wars: The High Republic titles finally out, we’re already approaching the next wave of books that Star Wars has planned for The High Republic series.

The second wave of The High Republic series will kick off around June. And part of that includes the next novel in the series, The Rising Storm (which will be released on June 29) from long-time Star Wars author Cavan Scott. This is a direct sequel to Light of the Jedi from Charles Soule, so there will be a few spoilers from that book as we discuss the latest bit of news to come from the Star Wars publishing world.

On Thursday, StarWars.com released an excerpt from The Rising Storm, and it highlights a new character that was mentioned in another announcement from the company. That character is Ty Yorrick, a former Jedi who is now out in the galaxy as a lone warrior and monster hunter. In the previous announcement, it was revealed that Ty would be featured in The High Republic’s series of graphic novels titled The Monster of Temple Peakalso written by Cavan Scott. And based on the excerpt Star Wars just shared, it seems like she’s the perfect person to handle the task that she encounters in The Rising Storm.

The Rising Storm excerpt summary

From the excerpt published by Star Wars, we learn a few things about Ty. First, she’s definitely the loner type. And to her, she’s better off that way. Even if she weren’t a (former) Jedi, the principle of attachment would mean nothing to her. She’s not one to name inanimate objects, such as ships, or not even her own droids. But at her heart, she is still a Jedi in the sense that she uses her skills to help those who are less fortunate.

In this case, she’s approached by a group of local farmers who seem to desperately need her help. There’s a monster in their town, and it is killing their children. What’s peculiar about this monster is that despite their traps, it “wrecks our plots” and  “ruins the crops.” So in the end, and after an extensive internal monologue from Ty, she agrees to help the people. That’s where the excerpt ends.

While the details on this monster are kept vague, it is possible that this monster is of the Drengir species — a plant-like monster that has appeared as a secondary villain of sorts alongside the Nihil in The High Republic. The Drengir were not mentioned in Light of the Jedi, but it’s possible they may now appear in the next adult novel in this series.

What’s also unclear is if Ty will be fighting the Drengir only, or if she will somehow find her way back to the Jedi. While it feels like there is currently peace, Marchion Ro and his Nihil still lurk in the shadows, waiting to strike. And so, the Republic will likely use all the help they can get, even if it means calling on someone who dropped out of the Jedi Order like Ty.
