For most Star Wars fans, all eyes are currently geared towards the ongoing series The Bad Batch currently streaming on Disney+. However, for those wishing to gaze into the future, things are less clear

We know a great deal about what is slated for official release in the galaxy far, far away. Later this year, we will get a first glimpse at The Book of Boba Fett starring the titular clone bounty hunter himself. Sometime next year, we will see the greatly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor returning to his iconic role.

But for fans of the first live-action Star Wars series, things are less certain for now. Seasons 1 and 2 or The Mandalorian both aired in late 2019 and 2020. We know for now that there will be no season 3 this year as the end-of-the-year slot seems to be occupied by the new Boba Fett series. So, Is there going to be a season 3 for The Mandalorian?

The Mandalorian season 3: canceled or picked up?

In a recent chat with Ewan McGregor for Variety, The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal revealed that they had not even started shooting for a third season of the show. To put fears aside, it is unlikely the show will ever be canceled any time soon for several reasons.

Those primarily being: Disney and Lucasfilm are very deliberate with their content cycles. Grogu, or Baby Yoda, is extremely popular. Even though his story in the show seems to have come to a conclusion, it is likely we have not seen the last of the elderly infant.

Some snags to get over are, of course, what the future of the character Cara Dune is — previously portrayed by stunt actor and MMA fighter Gina Carano, who Lucasfilm has confirmed is no longer employed by the studio. This means that the character may be recast or simply put aside altogether.

While the premiere date of The Mandalorian season 3 may be up in the air at the present time, Lucasfilm will likely make some formal announcement in the months to come. A 2021 release date is definitely not in the plans. But mid-to-late 2022 is more likely at this point.
