Star Wars games have seen a sort of renaissance in the past few years with the popularity of the Battlefront sequel (not to be confused with the original sequel to the original game released over 10 years earlier) and Jedi: Fallen Order. For many, Star Wars: Hunters was another promising project from Electronic Arts. While the game is still happening, it has officially been delayed.
The game was first announced back in February 2021 as a collaboration between Zynga and Lucasfilm Games that would debut exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
Star Wars News Net suggested EA may be delaying the Switch exclusive in order to dedicate more resources to a Jedi: Fallen Order sequel. A direct sequel to the 2019 single-player adventure has not been officially confirmed, but if the buzz around the possibility is any indication, players of the original game would be more than happy to see more of the story unfold.
While the two games are predicted to be very different from one another — one is a multiplayer battle simulator and the other a single-player, story-driven experience — EA has made multiple free multiplayer games recently, and capitalizing on Fallen Order as a priority might be a better business decision for them for the time being.
However, delays in everything from games to comics to books have been widespread over the past year and a half. This latest development could be the result of EA, like many other companies, being forced to shift resources and make tough decisions about which projects are going to be the most profitable in the short term.
The events of Hunters are set to take place around the same time period as The Mandalorian and will feature familiar Star Wars characters in a free-to-play battle arena setting similar to the mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. The game is still set to release sometime in 2022.
