Though summer is still technically in its final stages, fall is upon us, and so is the scariest month of them all. For Star Wars comics fans, another annual tradition is also on the horizon. The return of the Vader’s Castle series is less than a month away, and a new preview of Ghosts of Vader’s Castle hints it’s going to be everything we hoped for and more.

These spooky Vader’s Castle mini-series — which centers around Vader’s Mustafar castle, because where else? — often take well-known Star Wars characters such as Han Solo and Hera Syndulla and make them the stars of their own haunted adventures. The tradition began with Tales from Vader’s Castle in 2018 and continued with Return to Vader’s Castle in 2019. Both were five-issue runs that combine the horrors of Halloween with the thrilling fun of Star Wars comics.

Shadow of Vader’s Castle, 2020’s version of the now annual event, was a 40-page one-shot by renowned High Republic heartbreaker Cavan Scott.

This year, Ghosts of Vader’s Castle returns to the five-issue miniseries format — but don’t let the Star Wars Adventures label steer you away. Scott is a master at writing Star Wars stories suitable for all ages, and even more importantly, he’s having a great time doing it.

“We’re now on our fourth year of spooky “Star Wars” stories, which blows my horror-loving mind,” Scott said, according to Space.com. “Thank you to everyone who has embraced this creepy little corner of a galaxy far, far away, giving us the opportunity to tell terrifying tales every Halloween.”

Based on Scott’s enthusiasm for the project and the consecutive four-year annual release, we’d be more surprised if the Vader’s Castle series didn’t continue than if it did. There’s nothing terrifying about another excuse to celebrate a holiday with Star Wars.
