The Jedi of the prequel era were not technically forbidden to love. But attachments of any kind — especially romantic ones — were highly frowned upon. For a long time, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala were seemingly the only ones to break the rules. The Clone Wars series, however, revealed that Obi-Wan Kenobi could have gone down a similar path before he and Anakin first met.

Duchess Satine and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s relationship

It’s long been said that a Jedi and a Mandalorian are rarely seen working together. But Obi-Wan and Satine are just one of many exceptions to this unwritten “rule.”

The two met while Obi-Wan and his master Qui-Gon Jinn were assigned to protect Satine during a conflict. The two apparently grew close throughout the duration of the assignment but parted ways when Obi-Wan returned to the Jedi temple with his master.

Did Obi-Wan Kenobi have a girlfriend?

Obi-Wan and Satine weren’t “officially” together since he would have been forbidden to be romantically involved with her as a Jedi. But their romantic connection was strong enough that, years later, Obi-Wan actually revealed that if Satine would have asked him to stay with her, he would have left the Jedi Order.

Satine eventually confessed her love to Obi-Wan on Mandalore after Maul used her as bait to draw the Jedi to the planet to save her. Unfortunately, that moment marked the end of their relationship forever.

What happened to Duchess Satine?

Maul’s long-standing grudge against Kenobi led him to do the one thing he knew could wound the Jedi Master’s spirit beyond repair: taking Satine’s life, and right in front of the love of her life no less.

Satine died in Kenobi’s arms on Mandalore at the menacing hands of Maul. The Sith apprentice then took the Jedi into custody, forcing him to dwell on the pain of losing Satine once again — this time permanently.

It’s impossible to say whether or not Obi-Wan and Satine might have finally allowed their love for each other to blossom if the duchess had lived. Years later, Kenobi was eventually able to forgive Maul for what he had done despite the cost.
