Star Wars video games have been few and far between over the last few years as EA has owned exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games. But with EA’s exclusivity coming to an end soon, fans are hoping for a new deluge of games set in a galaxy far, far away in the coming years.
This week, Lucasfilm announced their Bring Home the Bounty campaign that is designed to drum up hype for new Star Wars merchandise in the coming weeks and months. In the article on the official Star Wars website, the interactive poster seems to imply there will be some sort of announcement about a Star Wars video game on Dec. 14, showing a game controller as the hint as to what to expect on that day for the announcement.
What could this game be? Is it an announcement of a new game, a confirmation of a game in development? Or could it be the release date of a game we know is slated to arrive soon?
New Star Wars video game coming?
The most likely announcement for that Dec. 14 date is the release of Star Wars: Hunters. The game is a competitive arena combat game that takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire. It’s developed by Zynga and is set to release on the Nintendo Switch, IOS, and Android.
Right now, Hunters doesn’t have an official release date, but most have rumored it to be released either late 2021 or sometime in early 2022.
If the announcement isn’t about Star Wars: Hunters, then what could it be?
There are tons of confirmed and rumored Star Wars games right now that are either in development or soon to be developed. Ubisoft is currently working on an open-world game set in the Star Wars universe, Quantic Dream is rumored to be developing a Star Wars game, and Aspyr is remaking Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
None of those games have a set release date, and it’s unlikely the Dec. 14 announcement would be to reveal a release date for any of those games considering where they are in the development timeline.
Could the December announcement be about another EA game, possibly a sequel to the very successful Jedi: Fallen Order? Fans have been clamoring for a sequel to the single-player hit for a while now, and EA has said that they will continue to work on Star Wars games despite losing their exclusivity to the I.P.
Regardless of the announcement, it’s nice to know that Disney and game developers are finally focusing on giving fans more games set in the vast Star Wars universe.
