Book of Boba Fett teasers hype bounty hunter’s return to claim crime underworld throne
Just one month out from the series premiere, The Book of Boba Fett can’t get here quick enough.
The new Star Wars series arrives on Dec. 29 and follows the eponymous green-armored bounty hunter (Temuera Morrison) and mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) as they return to Tatooine to claim the coveted criminal underworld throne once held by Jabba the Hutt.
If you’ve watched The Mandalorian, you’ll know Boba made his triumphant return to the galaxy in season 2 with a post-credits scene revealing The Book of Boba Fett and teasing Boba and Fennec’s future shenanigans. Since then, Star Wars fans have been clamoring for more about the show, which characters could make an appearance and any details teasing just how Boba survived after Han Solo knocked the Jabba-hired bounty hunter into the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi.
In two recent teasers for the series, there are some familiar sights from the first full trailer like some loaded looks between Boba and Fennec, shots of the vast sands of Tatooine and stone buildings of Mos Eisley and quick shots teasing the duo’s not-so-warm welcome back to Jabba’s palace.
But there are some new shots as well, like brief glimpses of Boba’s unique starship (formerly called Slave I) and him boldly selling his intentions to rule with respect instead of fear. In the most recent teaser that Star Wars shared on Monday, there’s also a brief shot of Boba hooked up to a breathing apparatus inside a container of liquid (probably Bacta). And, as Morrison narrates how Boba was “left for dead on the sands of Tatooine,” there’s a shot of several Tusken Raiders walking through a sand storm — possibly teasing flashbacks of Boba escaping or being rescued from the Great Pit of Carkoon.
Star Wars also shared some stunning new character posters for Boba and Fennec, showing them helmeted and standing amidst the swirling gritty sands of Tatooine.
The Book of Boba Fett appears to have a goal of building on the success of The Mandalorian while also blending many of the elements made popular in the Star Wars shows that came before it. Set on a desert planet and focused on the post-Empire criminal underworld, The Book of Boba Fett clearly brings back those amazing space western vibes. But it wouldn’t be a Star Wars show without politics, and the teasers and trailers subtly hint at the intriguing political machinations fueling some of the galaxy’s most ruthless cowboys.
In a recent interview with Empire, executive producer Jon Favreau revealed what fans can expect from Boba and Fennec as they return to the “power vacuum” created on Tatooine following the deaths of Jabba and Bib Fortuna.
"“Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist,” Favreau said. “You pull somebody like that out of the ecosystem of Tatooine — and Hutt Space in general — and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre.”"
A power vacuum. Space cowboys and gangsters. It’s clear The Book of Boba Fett will be gritty and violent with an emphasis on the antiheroism of its main characters — the perfect way to bring back the beloved bounty hunter and build upon his treasured legacy.
