Ivanna Sakhno joins Star Wars: Ahsoka in newly created role
By Meg Dowell
The more we learn about Star Wars: Ahsoka, the less we know – or that’s how it’s seemed with each new casting announcement thus far. We’ve known from the beginning that Rosario Dawson would reprise her role as Ahsoka in the live-action series, but even new casting rumors bring additional layers of mystery to a show we know almost nothing about.
Earlier this week, Deadline announced that Ivanna Sakhno (Pacific Rim: Uprising) has joined the cast of the upcoming Disney+ show. But that’s all the news we have about the series’ progress. Due to filming and production – and there being multiple shows premiering next year – Ahsoka isn’t expected until 2023 at the earliest.
Sakhno will allegedly be playing a character we haven’t met before, which takes other familiar Star Wars: Rebels characters like Hera Syndulla off the table. But one of the many great things about The Mandalorian have been its new characters mixed in with the occasional familiar guest appearance (such as Luke Skywalker at the end of Season 2). Star Wars is at its best when it blends the familiar and the new. Also, Ahsoka isn’t a Rebels sequel even if it may include Sabine Wren.
Knowing Dave Filoni, this new character will most certainly add depth and heart to Ahsoka’s journey even if they only appear for a brief time. Characters are never wasted in these projects, even if the payoff takes a minute.
Many have speculated that, due to her appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2, Ahsoka’s show will focus on her trying to locate Grand Admiral Thrawn, and possibly Ezra Bridger as a result since the two were last seen together at the end of Rebels. Some have also predicted that the World Between Worlds will play a role in the story and further explain Ahsoka’s relationship with space and time.
Who do you want to see join the Ahsoka series next?
