RUMOR: High Republic kids’ series reportedly coming to Disney+
By Meg Dowell
The High Republic began as a publishing initiative that focused on books and comics exclusively. Aside from an audio drama focused on the character of Lourna Dee, these stories have yet to expand beyond the page. This could change, according to rumors that another High Republic TV show is in development.
Cinelinx reported: “Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hearing a number of things from multiple sources,” claiming a Disney+ series set in The High Republic era is in the works. The series would reportedly focus on kids. One of the original “Luminous Five” authors is also supposedly working on the story for the show.
Though Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Charles Soule, Daniel José Older, and Cavan Scott were the main authors to contribute to the High Republic initiative in its first phase, additional authors have since been added to the family. This means Lydia Kang, Tessa Gratton, Zoraida Córdova, or George Mann could potentially be part of developing the above-mentioned show, though it seems they might be pretty busy writing books and comics instead of a TV series.
This may be strictly a rumor, but it’s not the only ongoing discussion of a High Republic series. Kathleen Kennedy announced The Acolyte over a year ago, a series slated to take place near the end of the era. For the most part, plans to expand the era into even more shows have not been discussed publicly.
Because this series wasn’t mentioned during the Disney Investor Day lineup back in 2020, and The Acolyte is also expected to take place during The High Republic era, it’s not certain whether or not we’ll see another series set in this era anytime soon. However, with some Star Wars projects on hold, there could potentially be room for more shows on Disney+ in the future.
For now, there are plenty of High Republic books and comics to keep the characters going for quite some time.
