With another Nintendo Direct in the bag, we now know that the Switch, which is quickly becoming something of a classic Star Wars machine, will be receiving some more Star Wars action soon.

The port kings at Aspyr are set to work their magic once again. During the latest Nintendo Direct, a remaster of classic Star Wars title, The Force Unleashed, was announced to receive a Nintendo Switch release.

The title, which was originally released in 2008 on just about every system with an active player base, looked to act as a bridge between Episodes III and IV. The Force Unleashed told the story of Galen Marek, codenamed “Starkiller”, who acted as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice. Starkiller was tasked with wiping out the remaining Jedi. As the game progressed, Starkiller learned more of the Jedi, and the Sith, and played a role in the birth of the Rebellion.

Console differences

Due to the difference in power capabilities between console generations, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions were slightly different to the Wii, PS2, and PSP versions. While the overall plot was the same, the Wii, PS2, and PSP versions enjoyed a handful of extra levels, as well as a multiplayer mode. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions may have had slightly fewer levels, but enjoyed a greater level of fidelity in the physics engine, meaning the player is capable of more dynamic force abilities.

Interestingly, the version being ported to the Switch is the Nintendo Wii edition. That is despite the Switch being able to more than handle titles from the Xbox 360 and PS3 era. While Switch owners will miss out on the better-looking of releases, they will get to enjoy those extra levels (Jedi Temple, anyone?) in HD for the first time. Furthermore, the game can be played with motion controls in full, for those hoping to re-live those waggle-heavy days of the late 2000s.

Busy times

It’s been a time for Star Wars in the video game space. With a handful of titles from EA developer, Respawn Entertainment, announced only a fortnight ago, in addition to the bevy of titles announced over the past few weeks and months, there’s plenty to look forward to over the next few years.

The Force Unleashed is set to release for $19.99/£17.99, and will drop on April 20, 2022. Pre-orders are now live, and the title looks set to take up around 3.9gb of space. Whether a version of the game comes to other consoles remains to be seen, but we’re looking forward to replaying this one, nevertheless!

Will you pick up The Force Unleashed? Is there a title you’re hoping sees a re-release on modern consoles? Let us know in the comments!
