Rogue Squadron: Patty Jenkins contacted a Star Wars Legends author about original novels
By Meg Dowell
Despite rumors of further delays and even cancelations, Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron still appears to be on track for a 2023 theatrical release. Though we don’t know exactly what sate of production the project is currently in, we do know steps have been taken to tell a truly remarkable story whenever it’s ready for the world to see.
A recent Twitter post suggested Michael Stackpole had already spoken with Jenkins regarding Rogue Squadron.
“Great meeting Michael Stackpole who told me he was highly excited about the upcoming #RogueSquadron movie,” the tweet said, “and assured me Patty Jenkins had been in contact with him early on.”
Stackpole wrote half of the X-Wing books in the 1990s, a series that told stories about Rogue Squadron after Return of the Jedi in the Star Wars Legends continuity. These books were among many other stories that gave fans more material to enjoy when there weren’t movies or.TV shows regularly being released between the original and prequel film trilogies.
Though Stackpole’s exact level of involvement in Jenkins’ film is unclear, their meeting does imply that Jenkins wants to honor his work in the story she plans to tell on the big screen as much as possible.
The film was part of the massive 2020 project delay that pushed everything back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but no official reports have confirmed any further delays. Jenkins’ schedule appears to be free enough for her to work on the upcoming film as planned, which means Star Wars fans still have a new movie to look forward to fairly soon despite various rumors that it wasn’t going to happen.
Rogue Squadron, directed by Patty Jenkins, is expected to release in theaters in December 2023.
