Mon Mothma is well known as the leader of the rebellion against the Empire, but she was also a senator during the era of the Republic and continued her role in the first years of Imperial rule.

Less is known about her life during this period, but the upcoming series, Andor, is set to give Mothma the spotlight she deserves. It will explore Mothma’s journey as she formed the Rebel Alliance, using her wit and leadership skills to outsmart those who stand in the way of peace. Before Andor’s premiere, here are a few things you might not know about Mon Mothma.

She was close friends with Bail Organa and Padmè Amidala

Mothma may not have been the star of The Clone Wars show, but she certainly left her mark, primarily in her role as a confidant of Senators Organa and Amidala. She shared many of their views and supported their efforts to protect the galaxy and promote peace. This friendship would be important later as she was forming the Rebel Alliance with the help of Organa and his daughter, Leia.

She opposed increasing military funding during the Clone Wars

Mothma’s commitment to peace was clear in The Clone Wars arc “Heroes on Both Sides” when she sided with Amidala and Organa in opposition increased funding to the military, which would prolong the war. Though their lives were threatened for taking this stance on the issue, Mothma and her colleagues stood firm and did what they could to put an end to the conflict.

She worked for peace between the Republic and the Separatists

Mothma was also present during a peace conference between Republic and Separatist senators. In The Clone Wars episode “A Friend in Need”, the two opposing governments meet on Mandalore to discuss the possibility of reconciliation. Mothma is among the group selected to represent the Republic. Though their negotiations end in hostility, Mothma does not give up the push for an end to the Clone Wars.

She was concerned about Palpatine’s increasing power

As the Clone Wars were approaching their disastrous conclusion, Mothma met with Amidala, Organa and other senators to discuss the power that Palpatine had amassed. She was worried about the fate of democracy in a galaxy where the Republic Senate was fading in power as Palpatine claimed more for himself. It was during this meeting where her plans for rebellion were first voiced. She would not stop with words, however. Eventually, she would grow the Rebel Alliance into the force that takes down the Empire.

Mon Mothma’s story will continue in Andor. Season 1 will premiere on September 21 on Disney+.
