As fans gear up for the next Star Wars offering to land on Disney+, Andor, it is never too early to begin looking at what lies on the horizon. One of the biggest upcoming releases is Ahsoka, as the eponymous character will embark on her own journey after settling things with Luke Skywalker and the Mandalorian in The Book of Boba Fett.
Now, we don’t know very much about the show beyond casting announcements. Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka while Natasha Liu Bordizzo will suit up as Sabine Wren for the character’s live action debut. Even Hayden Christen is expected to take on one of Anakin’s many forms, whether Jedi knight or Sith lord. Ivanna Sakhno, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ray Stevenson have signed on in unnamed roles as well.
All that being said, what will Ahsoka actually be about? And who will Ahsoka be squaring off against? We’ve gotten trickles of information, and Dawson has delivered one more, specifically in reference to the big bad everyone is expecting to see.
Speaking at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo — keep your eyes peeled for more teases from there — Dawson had this to say about Grand Admiral Thrawn, and just how he, and perhaps even a familiar Marvel hero, may factor into Ahsoka.
"“That dude, man…incognito. Maybe we get the Scarlet Witch to help us, she can jump through Multiverses, right? Let’s go, girl! Yeah, I mean, that’s a really big key kind of giveaway in Mando about what my show could potentially be about. Obviously, we are really trying to track [Thrawn] down, so we’ll see what happens…”"
Now, Scarlet Witch jokes aside, there isn’t really much to make of what Dawson says here. Dave Filoni and company made it clear that Ahsoka was on the hunt for Thrawn when she dropped his name in The Mandalorian. It was not a matter of if, but when, that story continued. Ahsoka’s own spin-off series seems like the perfect place to resume it.
Plus, there are consistent rumors surrounding Thrawn’s casting and the fact that multiple Star Wars: Rebels characters — not just Sabine but Chopper and seemingly Hera Syndulla — are set to appear in Ahsoka. While we do not know plot specifics, it will almost certainly revolve around Ahsoka and The Ghost Crew’s pursuit of Ezra Bridger. Considering how things ended up in Rebels, there is no doubt that the path to Ezra goes through Thrawn.
It may just be me, but it sounds like Ahsoka may really end up being Star Wars Rebels: Season 5. You won’t hear me complaining about that either if Grand Admiral Thrawn takes centerstage in it. Based on what Dawson had to say here, it seems like that’ll be the case, too.
Keep up with the latest announcements on Ahsoka and all that’s coming to Disney+ here at Dork Side of the Force!
