Ewan McGregor responds to Mark Ruffalo’s Star Wars comments
By Meg Dowell
Whenever actors make the rounds promoting new projects, there’s always a flurry of quotes that come out of their back-to-back interviews about their journey through the industry, their latest projects, and even their thoughts on film, television, and Hollywood overall. Recently, Mark Ruffalo’s offhand comments about Star Wars were taken largely out of context — so much so that Star Wars veteran Ewan McGregor was asked to respond in an interview of his own.
Comparing Star Wars and Marvel, Ruffalo commented: “If you watch a Star Wars, you’re pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time. It might have a little bit of humor. It might have a little bit of different animation. But you’re always, really, in that same kind of world.”
It seems the actor wasn’t “bashing” the franchise, but rather making an honest comparison between Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite both Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios falling under the larger Disney umbrella, the franchises are very different. Comparisons between the two are bound to happen.
Still, McGregor responded to Ruffalo’s comments in a recent interview, putting more of an uplifting spin on the idea that you don’t get the same thing with Marvel that you get with Star Wars.
“That’s the beautiful thing about how passionate Disney, Lucasfilm, all of us are, who are involved with it [from] the beginning,” McGregor said, “is we try really hard not to let anything of the bad just to protect your experience of seeing it for the first time.”
No matter what these big stars say about franchises they do and don’t work directly with, there is always the chance they could still end up in each others’ worlds even if they never considered it a possibility. We could get Ruffalo in Star Wars, or even a McGregor in the MCU. You never know.
And that’s why certain actors will never publicly say malicious things about other major Hollywood projects. They could end up the star of a movie or show in that universe someday; it happens all the time.
