When does Quest for the Hidden City take place in the Star Wars timeline?

The second phase of The High Republic publishing initiative kicked off earlier this month with Path of Deceit by Justina Ireland and Tessa Gratton. The next book in this wave of stories in the newest Star Wars era releases this week.

Quest for the Hidden City by George Mann (who has written many Star Wars stories before, including the Myths & Fables and Dark Legends short story anthologies, among others) is the middle-grade release of this current High Republic wave. But even though it’s written for slightly younger audiences, the story may still be worth your time.

The book tells two intertwining stories: One of a group of Jedi in search of — you guessed it — a hidden city, and another about a father/son duo trapped on a dangerous planet with no notable means of escape.

Without spoiling anything about the plot, this is one of very few Star Wars stories to date that features a healthy though evolving relationship between a father and son. It’s a major point and lesson in the story, and the ending isn’t the tragic conclusion you may have come to expect from High Republic stories … or Star Wars stories in general.

Phase 2 of The High Republic takes place 150 years before Light of the Jedi, which takes place approximately 250 or so years before The Phantom Menace. So we’re looking at about 400 years earlier in the timeline than the prequels.

The galaxy looks very different, but it’s still the familiar Star Wars you may be hoping for.

The story is a bit shorter, simpler, and more fast-paced. But that’s not a bad thing, especially considering the books it will be sandwiched between. Stay tuned for more on that.

Star Wars The High Republic: Quest for the Hidden City by George Mann releases on November 1, 2022, and is available for pre-order now.
