Luke Skywalker should be in Ahsoka, but not The Mandalorian season 3

After Luke Skywalker’s prominent appearances in The Mandalorian season 2 finale and in an episode of The Book of Boba Fett, many Star Wars fans are wondering if Luke will be in The Mandalorian season 3 or in the Ahsoka series.

Just because Lucasfilm has the ability to bring a young post-Return of the Jedi Luke into any live-action series now doesn’t always mean they should. From a storytelling standpoint, it makes more sense to bring Luke into Ahsoka while keeping him out of The Mandalorian season 3.

Why Luke should be in Ahsoka

Fans were shocked in The Book of Boba Fett when it was revealed that Luke and Ahsoka Tano have already met. Their first meeting feels like a fascinating story that is begging to be told, especially given their drastically different experiences with Anakin Skywalker. Hayden Christensen reportedly returning as Anakin for the Ahsoka series only adds further validity to this idea, with the idea of Anakin’s Force ghost reuniting with his son and apprentice being too good to pass up.

Luke doesn’t need to be a big part of the Ahsoka series. He can just show up for a single episode as he did in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Luke and Ahsoka meeting and further exploring their relationship can provide valuable insight into her current identity with the Force and as a Jedi, along with why she was so adamant that she wouldn’t train Grogu.

Ahsoka is the ideal series to grapple with what it means to be a Jedi and deeply Force-sensitive at this point in the timeline and to dive into the more mystical aspects of Star Wars. That is the kind of story Luke belongs in as he becomes a wiser Jedi and begins to build his academy for future Jedi.

As for whether a Luke appearance would overshadow Ahsoka in her own series, it shouldn’t be a problem if Luke is confined to just an episode or two. In addition to Ahsoka (and possibly Luke and Anakin), the series is already going to be packed with beloved Star Wars Rebels characters. Unlike other Star Wars shows that are relying more so on new characters, Ahsoka appears to be more focused on established characters from the Skywalker saga and Dave Filoni’s animated projects.

Why Luke shouldn’t be in The Mandalorian season 3

After spending time training with Luke in The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu chose to be a Mandalorian and reunite with Din Djarin instead of continuing his Jedi training. Given this decision, there is no reason for Luke to be in The Mandalorian season 3.

Grogu is charting his own path with Din, a path that is separate from Luke. As teased in The Mandalorian season 3 trailer, Grogu’s Force abilities are going to continue to grow, but he doesn’t need Luke for that. Bringing Luke back would also feel counteractive after Grogu’s big decision.

Luke also shouldn’t show up to save the day as he did in The Mandalorian season 2 finale as it will begin to feel anticlimactic if Luke just becomes a deus ex machina, and it will take away agency from Din, Grogu, and the other characters in The Mandalorian.

Season 3 seems to be more focused on Mandalore and what it means to be a Mandalorian. Luke doesn’t have a place in that story and he only had a place in season 2 because Din was trying to reunite Grogu with other Jedi. The impact of seeing Luke is going to diminish if he shows up in every single season of every Mandoverse series.
