Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season three, episode five, “Chapter 21: The Pirate.”

Last week’s episode of The Mandalorian saw Din, Grogu, and Bo-Katan put down roots in the Mandalorian covert as they each faced their own trials there. However, “The Pirate” seemed to unite the somewhat disparate threads of the season while bringing a looming villain to the surface. Read on to find out what happened in episode five.

It’s All Connected

“The Pirate” saw Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) reaching out to New Republic officer Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun Hyung-Lee) for reinforcements as Nevarro was attacked by pirates. When Teva took the message to his superiors, he was met with indifference and a growing feeling that the pirates were somehow connected to the Empire.

Making matters more complicated, Ella Kane (Katy M. O’Brian) interrupted Teva’s meeting at the right moment to dissuade any possible aid for the planet, making it likely that she’s still aligned with her former boss after all.

Speaking of the Imperial Officer, we heard several times in “The Pirate” that Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) never made it to trial as Teva continued to raise his suspicions which were confirmed by the episode’s final moments.

When Teva found an abandoned Republic prison ship that should have been transporting Gideon, it was clear once and for all that Gideon survived and is at large. However, Teva also discovered traces of beskar–making it seem as though Mandalorians helped him.

Whether Gideon has recruited any Mandalorians to his side or if it was a frame job remains to be seen. However, it’s certain the true villain of this season will be making his reappearance before we know it.

Walk Both Worlds

After the Mandalorians help Greef Karga to rid Nevarro of pirates, the magistrate extended them a refuge to stay there and live openly and safely. The Armorer (Emily Swallow) took Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) aside and told her that Bo’s vision of the Mythosaur was a sign–she was the one meant to unite all Mandalorians.

With the Armorer’s blessing to remove her helmet and walk both worlds, Bo-Katan has a new mission to find Mandalorians all over the galaxy and bring them to the new covert on Nevarro. We know Bo has had several crises of leadership in the past. Perhaps having Din and the rest of the Children of the Watch on her side will make a difference.
