One of the biggest reveals so far from Star Wars Celebration 2023 is that Daisy Ridley will be returning to Star Wars. She will reprise her role as Rey in a movie that takes place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker.

The movie will see Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order. It will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with a script from Steven Knight.

Ever since The Rise of Skywalker‘s release in 2019, there has been speculation about if or when Ridley would ever return to the franchise. It is thrilling to know that she is returning to play Rey once again. Rey means a great deal to fans all around the world. Her character and her story deserves to be further explored on the big screen.

The 15-year time jump from The Rise of Skywalker is an exciting storytelling choice. Rather than picking up where the last movie left off, it will allow Rey to have evolved and be in a new stage in her life and in her hero’s journey. It will be fascinating to see how she has changed since The Rise of Skywalker‘s ending.

While there will inevitably be a great deal of connectivity with the sequel trilogy movies, the time jump will also help the movie feel more like its own new story, instead of just being Episode X.

It remains to be seen if John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, or other actors from the sequel trilogy will reprise their roles alongside Ridley. It would be great to see all of them, but Boyega returning as Finn seems like the most natural choice considering the movie’s focus on Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order.

Finn was revealed to be Force-sensitive in The Rise of Skywalker and seemed like he was destined to be a Jedi ever since The Force Awakens. Finn’s journey as a Jedi has already started to be explored in the LEGO Holiday Specials on Disney+. This new movie is the perfect opportunity to explore Finn’s journey as a Jedi in a canon story as he and Rey work to rebuild the Jedi Order.

For now, fans can celebrate Ridley’s return as Rey and look forward to learning more details about the movie.
