Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season three, episode seven, “Chapter 23: The Spies.”

Last week’s episode of The Mandalorian ended with Bo-Katan bringing Axe Woves’ mercenary group of Mandlorians back into the fold with the help of the Darksaber. This week’s penultimate episode was a thrilling adventure as the Mandalorian factions worked together to retake Mandalore–only to find they weren’t alone.

Return of the Moff

One of the biggest plot points in “The Spies” revealed Ella Kane (Katy M. O’Brian) is still working for Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) who was still alive and at large as we had previously assumed.

The Moff officially made his reappearance in a shadow council meeting of other former Imperial officers that had implications that will likely echo into the next season of The Mandalorian as well as Ahsoka, primarily, the mention of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The shadow council is likely the beginning formation of the First Order, evidenced by the mention of the Praetorian Guards and Commandant Hux (Brian Gleeson), General Hux’s father. Moff Gideon and the Shadow Council’s power struggle with Thrawn is one that likely won’t be resolved this season, regardless of the Moff’s fate.

Moff Gideon’s also updated the council on his cloning research with Pershing–referred to as Project Necromancer. While we still don’t know why Kane would ensure that Pershing was unable to continue the work, it seems Gideon is somehow involved with the cloning work that would create Snoke and Palpatine’s return.

This is the Way

After finding the remnants of the Great Forge on Mandalore, Bo (Katee Sackhoff), Din (Pedro Pascal), and the rest of the Mandalorians were best by a force of Imperial troopers and soon trapped with no means of escape.

Moff Gideon quickly separated Din from the rest of the Mandalorians, taking him captive while Bo used the Darksaber to lead the rest of the Mandalorians and Grogu to safety.

In a true act of Mandalorian bravery, Paz Vizsla (Tait Fletcher) stayed behind to fight off the troopers and sacrificed himself. While he was able to impressively fight them off alone, they were soon followed by three Praetorian Guards whose weapons outmatched even Mandalorian beskar.

With Paz seemingly dead and Din captured by Moff Gideon, Bo and Grogu will have to find a way to save Din in the finale against seemingly impossible odds. We’ll have to tune in to find out how it unfolds and what exactly Moff Gideon wants with Din Djarin…
