The future of the Star Wars timeline was sort of up in arms ever since the 9-film Skywalker Saga ended with The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. Because the saga ended, fans weren’t too sure how the franchise would hold up and keep delivering content.
Besides all of the different and insanely good Disney+ shows coming out, fans are still craving and wanting more. They’re having withdrawals of that feeling of going to see a brand new Star Wars film in theaters, just like the good old days, with friends. That feeling might soon be returning to fans all across the globe, thanks to Star Wars Celebration 2023 announcing more information on the future of the franchise’s timeline.
What does the future timeline of Star Wars look like? What will be different and what will be the same?
Just recently, Star Wars Celebration happened over in Europe and not one, not two, but three brand new films were announced, as well as who will be directing them. In terms of timeline views for these three films, two out of the three are reported to take place in completely different timelines to what we’ve ever seen before. The first of the three films is actually set to take place roughly 25,000 years before The Skywalker Saga. The third film will be taking place roughly 15 years post-Episode IX.
Dawn of the Jedi
This title was actually already confirmed over at Star Wars Celebration, but it was the only one that we have a title for thus far. It is set to focus on and tell the true tale of bravery of the world’s very first Jedi and how they were able to navigate the Force “in a time of chaos”. Here, we might see other references, such as the first Jedi Temple and Prime Jedi (as seen in The Last Jedi). One last thing: with the Dark Horse comics shedding some light on this storyline, James Mangold (director) already announced that this story would be original with original charactesr; however, in the wise words of Julile Chen, host of Big Brother on CBS, “Expect the unexpected”. While that’s all we have on the film right now, we will be sure to give everyone updates as we see fit.
Dave Filoni’s Epic Planned Crossover
This is most likely going to be known as the “Heir to the Empire” film. It will be the only one of the three upcoming films that will be taking place alongside other stories within the Star Wars timeline; it will actually be tying in/crossing over the story lines of other famous Disney+ projects, including “the events between where 1983’s RETURN OF THE JEDI leaves off and 2015’s THE FORCE AWAKENS begins”. The phrase “heir to the empire” refers to the brand new Ahsoka trailer that refers to Grand Admiral Thrawn as this. Some people are even potentially expecting appearances from other past characters, such as Luke, Leia and Han, which is totally possible due to the CGI effects that exist now and have already been used with Carrie Fisher in Episode IX.
New (Jedi) Order
This newer part of the timeline will be brought together by female director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. First of all, I think that it’s super bad a** that her movie will be focusing on 15 years after the “downfall of The First Order/Sith Eternal because it has already been confirmed that Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley, will be returning and reprising her fan-favorite role. This film will also be focusing on a brand new set/team of Jedi whom are going to be led by a brand Jedi Master, and that Jedi Master is none other than Rey herself (again, how super bad a** is that…a woman leading a whole entire group of Jedi in the brand new Jedi Order).
That’s a wrap on what the future of the Star Wars timeline looks like! We can’t wait for even more to come out all about it!
