A new Ahsoka teaser trailer features Sabine Wren undergoing lightsaber training. Previous trailers have shown Sabine using Ezra’s green lightsaber and revealed that Sabine trained under Ahsoka Tano, with Sabine even saying, “You never made things easy for me . . . Master.”
Sabine wielded Ezra’s green lightsaber in a duel against Gar Saxon in Star Wars Rebels, and she mastered the Darksaber, but Sabine’s training with Ahsoka Tano surprised Star Wars fans. Check out the trailer below:
Sabine and Ahsoka are using training sticks, just as Kanan and Sabine did in the Rebels season 3 episode “Trials of the Darksaber.” Kanan wanted her to master fighting with the training sticks first, although he later realizes she will learn better with the Darksaber.
Sabine is also wearing a training helmet similar to what Luke Skywalker wears when training with Obi-Wan Kenobi aboard the Millennium Falcon in A New Hope and similar to what the Jedi younglings wear when Yoda is seen training them in Attack of the Clones. Obi-Wan and Yoda wanted their respective students to trust their feelings and connection to the Force instead of just relying on what they see.
This could be a hint that Sabine is Force-sensitive. Ahsoka is heard in the trailer saying, “Concentrate. Take in all that is around you.” Like what Obi-Wan wanted with Luke, Ahsoka may use the training helmet to teach Sabine to rely on the Force instead of just what she sees.
These are fun callbacks to familiar lightsaber training scenes in Star Wars, including Sabine’s training with Kanan, but the training itself is no joke. Ahsoka refuses to go easy on Sabine as she trips her during their training and then bluntly tells a frustrated Sabine, “Let’s go again.”
The droid Professor Huyang is also seen observing the training. As a droid who has existed for over 25,000 years and helped countless Jedi build their lightsabers, Huyang can provide additional input into Sabine’s lightsaber training.
Later in the trailer, Sabine duels Shin Hati while Ahsoka duels the Inquisitor, Marrok. The trailers have teased both duels, but this trailer confirms that the duels are happening simultaneously.
Ahsoka may seem like a harsh teacher, but her training will pay off when Sabine faces Shin and other lightsaber-wielding and Force-sensitive villains throughout the series. Trailers often only feature footage from the first few episodes, meaning there will likely be even more scenes of Sabine using a lightsaber that hasn’t been shown yet.
Ahsoka‘s two-episode premiere debuts on August 23, only on Disney+.
