There are many clans and families that make up Mandalorian society in Star Wars, and the Kryze family is a significant piece of Mandalore’s long history.

Two of the most well-known members of the family are Satine Kryze, who first appeared in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Bo-Katan Kryze, who originated in the same series but has since appeared in several more. Here is everything you need to know about both Mandalorian women and how they are related.

Who is Satine Kryze in Star Wars: The Clone Wars?

Satine Kryze served as the Duchess of Mandalore during the Clone Wars, and used pacifism to govern her people throughout the duration of her rule. Death Watch became an offshoot of her ideals as the group believed Mandalorians were a culture made up of warriors, and would go on to overthrow Satine with the help of Maul.

In the past, Satine and Obi-Wan Kenobi fell in love, and he revealed to her later that he would have left the Jedi Order for her if she had asked him to stay with her on Mandalore. Maul used Satine to lure Obi-Wan to the planet and, once there, he ended her life in front of him. Satine died in his arms.

Who is Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian?

Bo-Katan, formerly a member of the Nite Owls and a follower of Death Watch, was a Mandalorian princess and warrior. She was a key fighter during the Siege of Mandalore at the end of the Clone Wars. She briefly led Mandalore after being given the Darksaber, but was forced to surrender the weapon and her leadership to Moff Gideon and his imperial forces shortly after.

She never gave up on her quest to help her people return to Mandalore and reclaim their home. It was during this endeavor when she met Din Djarin, and the two would go on to form a meaningful friendship. They were victorious in the Battle for Mandalore, where Bo-Katan was able to confront Gideon again and prove her worth as the rightful leader of Mandalore.

Are Bo-Katan and Satine related?

At the end of The Clone Wars Season 5, it was revealed that Bo-Katan and Satine are sisters who ended up on opposite sides of a planet-wide conflict. Though it isn’t yet known what drove Bo-Katan to align with Death Watch, she turned her back to the group as soon as the revolt against her sister and the Mandalorian government erupted.

The two sisters never got the chance to reconcile before Satine’s death at the hands of Maul and the Darksaber. However, in Star Wars Rebels years later when Bo-Katan accepts the same saber from Sabine Wren, she does so in part “for my sister [Satine].”

By the time Bo-Katan appears in The Mandalorian, she mournfully declares she is the last in her family line — one of the reasons she displays relentless determination to take back her homeworld after the Empire destroyed the capital city during the Night of a Thousand Tears.
