Star Wars fans have another reason to see the upcoming addition to the Deadpool movie! The film’s director, Shawn Levy, known for his work on Arrival and Free Guy, recently revealed with The Hollywood Reporter that he was inspired by a scene from Return of the Jedi when filming an important scene.

Levy explained that one of his favorite moments in a theater was watching the final fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker when Vader realizes Luke has a sister. Watching this scene for the first time embodied the experience he hopes fans will continue to feel sitting in a movie theater: “an authentic, communal event” that can bring a diverse audience together.

Fans of the franchise will be able to recognize his tribute to this scene by the way it mirrors the pacing and framing of Return of the Jedi. When filming the scene, Levy even showed the film crew a clip of the scene, hoping to inspire their very own “Jedi moment” within Deadpool 3.

We may see alternating shots between hero and villain with tense, building dialogue. Or maybe Levy will focus on contrasting the shadows and showing shifting emotions across an actor’s face. In any case, recognizing the homage may require a thorough knowledge of the scene and a sharp eye.

Very little is known about the upcoming movie, so this insight into one of the most important scenes is one of the most significant clues we have gotten about the plot. The Deadpool scene is likely part of a final confrontation between the titular hero and the as-of-yet unnamed villain.

Why would someone as outgoing and invulnerable as Deadpool attempt to hide from a villain? What secrets or emotional attachments could trigger him to return to the fight? While this revelation currently fosters more questions than answers, as more details are revealed, the scene may help put the Star Wars reference into the context of the film.

Deadpool 3 is expected to premiere in 2024. Be sure to watch for the Jedi-inspired moment, one that Levy used to honor a scene that profoundly impacted him.
