Diego Luna debuted the character of Cassian Andor in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He reprised the role in the Disney+ show Andor, which took us through Cassian's life before he was an Intelligence Officer with the Rebel Alliance.
Season 1 of the series dealt with Cassian's introduction to the Rebellion and what he went through to start believing in the cause. Season 2 will show us his early days of opposing the Empire and the struggles and grief that come with it.
Take a look at the official trailer of Andor season 2 below:
After spending more than 10 years with Cassian and bringing alive every gritty detail of the morally grey character's past, Luna would understandably find it difficult to part ways. When asked how he will say goodbye to his role in an interview, Luna said, "I'm going to need therapy to answer it."
This wasn't the first time Luna opened up about Andor having an impact on him. In a May 2023 interview with Variety, he said that the show having only two seasons was good for his mental health. In between the production of Seasons 1 and 2, he took refuge in the theater, where his acting roots are. "In a way, it has kept me sane," the actor said, thankful to be away from the larger-than-life sets and relentless media obligations.
However, despite being part of the gargantuan Star Wars universe, Cassian still feels personal to Luna. "Besides being a parent, this is the longest I’ve invested in a single thing," Luna opened up with Rolling Stone. "I’ve never felt so close to anything so big. It’s a paradox to me. Life as an actor was the exact opposite: The tiniest project was always the most personal. And here there is a strange thing because even though this is a gigantic thing, it feels so personal."
Cassian had been a part of his life through many milestones, including being a father, moving out and back to Mexico, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Diego Luna discusses his last scene as Cassian Andor
Almost every major member of Season 1's ensemble cast will return for Season 2, including Genevieve O'Reilly (Mon Mothma), Adria Arjona (Bix Caleen), Stellan Skarsgård (Luthen Rael), Denise Gough (Dedra Meero), and Kyle Soller (Syril Karn). Ben Mendelsohn (Director Orson Krennic) and Alan Tudyk (K-2SO) will also reprise their Rogue One characters.
However, Luna ended up not sharing the screen with anybody else in the last scene he shot as Cassian. "At the end, we were shooting in a studio in Pinewood, and we were doing some cleanup," Luna said. "So the very last two things I shot were by myself in a cockpit, as lonely as it could end — a camera and myself, piloting for the last time."
Luna seized the opportunity to pretend flying a ship in Star Wars for the last time, knowing he would probably never get to ride such "crazy things" in any other set. Luna said the cast and crew had an "intense" party to wrap things up, especially after missing out on celebrating after the end of Season 1 due to the pandemic.
Andor Season 2 arrives on April 22 on Disney+.
