The Battle of Jakku is over, and it's time for the New Republic to get to work. Things aren't easy for our heroes as Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and their friends set out to protect the fledgling government in a new comic book series, Star Wars #1 (2025), coming on May 7.

Via StarWars.com, this is the first look at the new ongoing mainline series that takes place firmly after the events of Return of the Jedi. These were announced last year, following the comic book event The Battle of Jakku which wraps up this week. These first details line up with a lot of what we know about this era, especially with the Mandoverse show, most recently with Skeleton Crew.

Thanks to the power void left by the Empire, pirates are settling in across the galaxy to carve out their place in all of this. The New Republic scrambles to protect people while going through the pains of setting up a new government. The series also will return some familiar faces such as Mon Mothma and Beilert Valance.

Another familiar face is the creative team behind the comic. Alex Segura, the mind behind The Battle of Jakku, is back in charge as the writer of the series. Fan favorite artist Phil Noto joins as the illustrator. "It's a huge honor - and massive responsibility — to steer the Star Wars flagship, and I couldn't ask for a better collaborator than Phil Noto, who is just a masterful artist, and a Star Wars visionary," Segura told StarWars.com in the announcement.

This is a new era too, relatively unexplored in the current canon. The events of the Mandoverse won't begin for a few more years in the timeline, so the comics will get the chance to do something unique by diving into the earliest days of the New Republic and see how we get to where things are in The Mandalorian Season 1.

Segura noted this with StarWars.com, saying, "Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking."
