If you're a fan of the Battle of Hoth from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and have wanted to experience it on a more personal level, you're in luck! Days of Wonder has recently announced they will be releasing a new board game titled Star Wars: Battle of Hoth this summer! The board game will be based on the Command and Colors system, designed by famed board game designer Richard Borg.
Command and Colors
If you've never played Command and Colors before, don't feel bad. I haven't had the pleasure of being able to play it either. The YouTuber Harsh Rules has done rule breakdowns for Command and Colors: Ancients, as well as other Command and Colors systems. It seems to use a card-based system, which sounds pretty interesting. Star Wars: Battle of Hoth also appears to be using either the same or a very similar type of card-based system.
Star Wars: Legion
Another Star Wars wargame, which also uses cards, is called Star Wars: Legion by Atomic Mass Games. The cards used in Star Wars: Legion are referred to as command cards and upgrade cards, and they allow certain units to gain access to extra abilities, weapons, models, etc. If you've never heard of Star Wars: Legion before, it plays similarly to another wargame called Warhammer 40k by Games Workshop. Players will pay points to add certain units to their army, as well as heroes like Cassian Andor, Darth Vader, Han Solo, and more.
Days of Wonder
Chances are, if you're a fan of board games, you've most likely heard of Days of Wonder or at least a couple of their games, even if you haven't played them before. One of their most popular board games is Ticket to Ride, which has players trying to build different railroads across the USA. It's so popular that Bitewing Games listed it at number 32 on their Top 100 Board Games of All Time list.
Another popular board game from Days of Wonder is called Memoir '44, which, funnily enough, is also based on the Command and Colors system. As the name implies, it's set during World War II, or more specifically, during the Normandy D-Day Landings. In Memoir '44, you can play all six of the D-Day Landings, including Sword Beach, Juno Beach, and Omaha Beach.
Along with Memoir '44 and Command and Colors, Richard Borg is also serving as a game designer for Star Wars: Battle of Hoth, which means the game is in good hands and should hopefully be a blast to play. With the game releasing this summer, here's hoping we don't have to wait much longer before a release date is announced.
