Whip out your troubleshooting guide because there are plenty of stormtrooper puns in this book that really put the POP culture nods into these dad jokes. Star Wars: Dad Jokes - The Best Worst Jokes and Puns From a Galaxy Far, Fay Away... by Kelly Knox and illustrated by Johnny Sampson is a riot.
Between the groan-inducing jabs and the corny puns that got a good belly laugh out of me, Star Wars: Dad Jokes was a fun read that everyone in the family would enjoy. I could not stop smiling with each page turn to see what Knox would hit me with next. It's fast, funny, and truly creative. While I've heard some of these Star Wars puns a million times, Knox flexed her joke skills, coming up with many new quips I'd never seen before. It's a delightful Star Wars book that anyone can pick up.
Samson's illustrations are incredibly adorable. They often help sell the joke by spectacularly complementing Knox's words. Many of the images are hilarious on their own without even getting to the text. The facial expressions, especially, are wonderfully comical as they lean heavily into whimsy.
What surprised me, though, were some of the more recent additions or deeper cuts to books and comics. I assumed this would mostly focus on the Star Wars films, which appeal to a more general audience. While Lucasfilm animation is woefully underrepresented in this book (I always see you, Star Wars Resistance), there was some spotlight on more recent series like Andor slipped in. What completely surprised me was a full-page illustration and joke focused on Doctor Aphra. The fan-favorite comic character was a pleasure to see. A more casual fan might pick up this book, see Aphra, and look into who this character is thanks to Star Wars: Dad Jokes.
Star Wars: Dad Jokes was a delight to dive into. This hilarious book has something that every Star Wars fan will enjoy, even if you make your friends and family roll their eyes at the corny puns.
And you know pirate Hondo Ohnaka loves corn. I hear he pays a buck-an-ear.
