For any Star Wars fan looking for a project that's unique, laugh-out-loud funny, and filled with references you won't soon forget, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy might check all your boxes and more.
Like many of its predecessors, Rebuild the Galaxy perfectly captures the magic of LEGO Star Wars while simultaneously appealing to audience members of all ages. If you like Star Wars, whether you're a casual fan or superfan, you'll love this four-part special. But it's the unique elements of this story that set it apart in a good way.
The four episodes tell the story of Sig Greebling, a (literal) nerf herder who accidentally changes the entire galaxy with one Jedi relic. Suddenly, everything Sig knew about a galaxy far, far away has shifted -- and he's going to need some help to put the pieces back together.
Rebuild the Galaxy creates the unique opportunity to implement "what if"-style scenarios into a Star Wars project while keeping things lighthearted and interesting. Darth Jar Jar Binks, a reference to a viral online fan theory, instantly becomes hilarious rather than cringeworthy. Maul being an ally of the Rebel Alliance is as believable as it is entertaining.
But it's the heart of the story itself that really sells it. In Rebuild the Galaxy, Sig discovers he is a "Force Builder" who can seemingly create whatever he needs with the Force. But throughout the special, he is forced (no pun intended) to come to terms with the reality that what makes a hero isn't necessarily what you see on the outside. Rather, it's what's inside that makes someone worthy of saving the galaxy.
This special was also an opportunity for a variety of Star Wars actors to reprise their roles. Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Ahmed Best, Kelly Marie Tran, Same Witwer, and more lent their voices to alternate versions of their characters, adding even more life to the show.
On top of everything else, the special is genuinely funny at almost every turn. Per usual for these LEGO specials, the script includes references that poke fun at the franchise and its history in an endearing way. Sig originally mistakes Ewoks for Wookiees during story time, Kylo Ren once again appears without a shirt on, and Crait becomes a planet coated in pepper (instead of salt).
These are all references that more poke fun at fan discourse rather than the reference points themselves, and that's what makes it fun. We're all in on the jokes, and we're given both reason and permission to laugh at them (and ourselves).
So grab some popcorn, set aside about an hour and a half, and get ready to laugh, feel a little nostalgic, and imagine the many wacky and creative stories LEGO Star Wars might tell next.
