At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, The Bad Batch composer Sean Kiner joined The Character of Music: The Art of Scoring for Animation" panel to discuss his Star Wars work. When asked about the inspiration behind "Omega's Theme," discussing the very special influence brought him to tears.
"When I first wrote "Omega's Theme," he said, via Broadcast Music Inc,'s Twitter account, "the pandemic had just started. My daughter was a newborn, and I was literally writing with her in my lap, this little bundle of joy. And the world was so dark, and everything was so bad. Just to have her, to feel like pure potential, pure hope, knowing that I was going to do my best to try and make sure that this little bubble of happiness, that her life would be happy. That she would know that she was loved. I turned all that into . I literally wrote it with her on my lap. I was at my keyboard, so I can't help but to associate that with her."
He then discussed the final scene of the show when Omega, now an adult, leaves their island home of Pabu to join the Rebellion. She says goodbye to Hunter, who sees her off as she flies away to her next adventure without the rest of the Batch.
"So this freaking scene comes along!" Kiner says, getting a laugh from the audience. "And it's like her going off to college or something. Maybe it's a little dramatic of me, but I really feel like every time my children reach a new milestone, I'm so happy! Like 'Oh wow! Hello, new person! But also like, goodbye, I loved you, old version.' I mourn the person that they were. I don't know. It's wrecking me."
It's such a sweet moment from SDCC and really captures who Omega is in The Bad Batch. She was the heart and soul of the team, often the voice of reason, and someone who tried to see the best in everyone. It's incredibly fitting that Sean Kiner's inspiration came from such a pure source of his own personal happiness.
All three seasons of Star Wars: The Bad Batch are available to stream on Disney+.
