The Mandalorian & Grogu: What might the new movie be about
A relatively uneventful Tuesday was full of breaking news for Star Wars fans as Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie starring Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu. Jon Favreau will direct, and the film goes into production later this year. On top of that, according to sources at Deadline, The Mandalorian Season 4 is also still under development. If the news about Season 4 is true, it will be interesting to see what comes first: The Mandalorian Season 4 or the just announced Mandalorian and Grogu movie.
Assuming that the movie will be released before any potential Season 4, it's likely to take off following the events of Ahsoka . This would carry forward the plot of Grand Admiral Thrawn's return to the galaxy. In this scenario, Thrawn should be in the movie and feature heavily. Along with Thrawn, a host of Imperial Remnants should be Din Djarin's target. Season 3 ended with Din agreeing to work as an independent contractor on a case-by-case basis to capture Imperial Remnants for the New Republic.
There's not much to speculate on since plot details about the movie are under wraps, but a focus could be Din's hunt for Imperial Remnants and his ongoing training of his apprentice, Grogu. Jon Favreau also refers to Grogu as Din Djarin's "apprentice" in Lucasfilm's press release, so expect that to be at the heart of what the movie is about. Fans got to see them bonding as father and son. Although they're still hungry for some more of that heartwarming bond, the next step in their relationship is to show Din imparting his knowledge about "The Way" to his son.
The Mandalorian has always been full of exciting cameos, and we can probably expect the same from the movie. If Season 4 comes before the movie, Season 4 will likely focus on Din's hunt for Imperial Remnants, and the film will focus on a very different plotline. Maybe the movie will shift focus to Din Djarin helping out his friend Ahsoka Tano and her Padawan, Sabine Wren, who are stranded on Peridea. Hera Syndulla and Ezra Bridger may ask Carson Teva to help bring Ahsoka back to the galaxy. Teva could suggest that they meet Din Djarin, who has a little Mandalorian Jedi companion of his own.
If this is indeed the case, then the movie can lead into Ahsoka Season 2, which was also confirmed in the press release. Perhaps we'll see Ahsoka and Sabine return home in time for the crossover film by Dave Filoni with the help of Din Djarin and Grogu. It's fun to speculate on what's coming in the Mandoverse, but Lucasfilm has a lot to clarify regarding the future of The Mandalorian and the order in which all these shows and movies are likely to be released.
