What will Star Wars 50th anniversary movie be?
After the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu film, a post caught my eye on Twitter. It was from Jordan Maison, the editor of Cinelinx, and he was speculating about upcoming film dates. In his tweet, he said:
"My guess for the Star Wars films releasing:
2026 (if they keep both dates):
Mando & Grogu first
Rey’s New Jedi Order (should still film this year)
2027:
Filoni’s Heir to the Empire. Would coincide with the 50th anniversary (fitting since the big 3 will likely be in it)."
Since this tweet, we have gotten confirmation that The Mandalorian & Grogu has a 2026 release date. However, it still got me pondering about the topic.
What will the 50th anniversary Star Wars movie be?
I disagree with Maison on his take on Dave Filoni's Heir to the Empire film as the 50th. Though, I should note that I'm not ruling it out either. Along with The Mandalorian & Grogu, there are several seasons of television on the way. Skeleton Crew will debut this year, and we know that Ahsoka Season 2 is in the works. StarWars.com stated that Dave Filoni's Heir to the Empire film will "close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series." Depending on if there will be a second season of Skeleton Crew, a third of Ahsoka, and if there will be Season 4 of The Mandalorian, there might be too much storytelling to come between now and the 2027 anniversary.
What I think is more likely for the 50th anniversary is either the James Mangold movie about the Dawn of the Jedi or the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Rey Skywalker film. Both are good candidates because of what they represent and the story they're crafting. One is about the beginning of the Jedi Order. One is about the future of the Jedi Order. Both are laying the groundwork for the future of Star Wars storytelling by defining their set eras. The 50th anniversary could explore the beginning or the future.
Honestly, I would want both the Mangold and the Obaid-Chinoy for the 50th. Have one in May and one in December for the very reason stated above. It would be a very poignant, beautiful way to celebrate all of Star Wars, from its roots to the future of the Force.
