Gareth Edwards hasn't done anything Star Wars-related since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but his latest film has a significant connection to the galaxy far, far away. In a new interview with Collider, Edwards revealed the surprising inspiration behind Jurassic World Rebirth's D-Rex design.
The D-Rex, aka the Distortus Rex, is a mutated Tyrannosaurus rex that resembles a monster more than a dinosaur. Due to its strange design, which includes four arms, many fans who've watched Jurassic World Rebirth thought it resembled a famous Star Wars creature, and they were right. Gareth Edwards admitted that he took inspiration from the design of a Rancor, a creature recently featured in The Book of Boba Fett.
Edwards was asked about the D-Rex's design, and he revealed, "Basically, you took everything in a melting pot. It's really hard to come up with a monster idea. We put in a little bit of the Rancor from Star Wars. Don't tell people who work on Star Wars."

Producer and director Frank Marshall, who's also Lucasfilm's President Kathleen Kennedy's husband, jokingly added, "Don't tell Kathy." The D-Rex's design has been a hit with fans, and Jurassic World Rebirth is currently soaring at the box office. For Gareth Edwards, this is the first film he's made where he feels like everyone is on the same page.
"This was the first film I've ever worked on where a script existed, that everybody in the room, you, Steven, David Koepp, Universal, and myself, could all point out and go, "Let's go make that. That's the movie."
These comments are interesting when you consider everything that happened during the making of Rogue One. While Edwards has never discussed the movie's reshoots, Tony Gilroy has been vocal about his feelings regarding the movie's original cut. He recently compared the original cut of Rogue One before he was brought in for changes to a corpse. Gilroy's comments have created quite a stir, but Edwards has never told his side of the story.
Like Rogue One, Jurassic World Rebirth is a success at the box office so far. For Edwards, this was a smooth filmmaking experience because everyone from Frank Marshall to Steven Spielberg, and David Koepp were on the same page as him.
"We just talked about monster movies, and I realized the key to this was everybody in Hollywood, anywhere, making films are all trying to do the same thing, which is make a great film. Where the conflict comes from is if you disagree about what a great film is," Edwards revealed.
Luckily for Edwards, there was no conflict this time, but he admits that "If what your idea of a great film is not what someone else thinks is a great film, then that relationship's going to always be tricky." Jurassic World Rebirth is currently in theaters worldwide, and everyone who loves Star Wars should check out the movie to catch Edwards' Rancor-inspired D-Rex on the big screen.
