Skeleton Crew episode 3 review: Mysteries unraveling
By Meg Dowell
WARNING: This review contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 1, Episode 3: "Very Interesting, As An Astrogration Problem."
We have known from the very beginning of Skeleton Crew that At Attin has some weird stuff going on. The futher the kids venture out into the galaxy, the more they -- and therefore we -- learn about why their homeworld is so isolated from everyone and everything else. And this is only one of a dozen things that make this show, thus far, absolutely phenomenal.
Let's set aside the fact that the pacing is flawless, the tension is palpable, and the acting doesn't take you out of any scene for even a moment. Set in the Star Wars universe, everything that's happening is believable, captivating, and somehow manages to build out the universe even more -- an impressive feat considering the franchise is nearly 50 years old.
All that, combined with the fact that there are constant mysteries unraveling before our eyes as all the action and character development is taking place, continues to leave me in wonder as the credits roll after each new episode. And this week's new installment, "Very Interesting, As An Astrogration Problem," was no exception. I need more, and I need it now. But that's another thing that makes Skeleton Crew shine: Its cliffhangers make sense, leaving you with just enough to feel satisfied while still leaving you counting the days until the next episode drops.
The story seems to be suggesting that At Attin's resources are so valuable that the planet's government needs to hide it from the rest of the galaxy in order to keep its citizens safe. But the fact that this also means keeping everyone on the planet from leaving -- not even for a vacation? Come on -- is puzzling. It seems as though someone in the past also managed to escape, and At Attin's secrets may have fallen into the wrong hands. I could be wrong about that, of course, but we're just here to have fun -- speculation is warranted.
Will we see Kh'ymm, the owl lady, again? Are more of At Attin's secrets about to come to light? How far are the parents going to be willing to go to see their children safe again? And perhaps most importantly -- is Jod really after this supposed treasure? Or did he say that in the heat of the moment to avoid re-capture? Can he be trusted -- or are the kids in more danger than they were before?
You've got to love when Star Wars leaves you with more questions than it answers -- in a way that makes each new installment of a story both exciting and rewarding. Something tells me this is going to end up being one of the best series we've seen in a long time.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is available to stream on Disney+ now.
