Skeleton Crew episode 3 recap: The Owl Lady but not the one from the other Disney Show
Week one of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was a banger premiere. Episode 1, "This Could Be A Real Adventure," introduced our young protagonists and took us to the mysterious world of At Attin. Then, episode 2, "Way, Way Out Past the Barrier," zipped them across the galaxy to the pirate hub of Port Borgo where they are thrown into the brig. Here, they meet a mysterious Force user who agrees to help them get home (after hearing about how At Attin might be a legendary treasure world).
Let's recap everything you missed in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 3, "Very Interesting, As An Astrogration Problem."
We open back on At Attin in the home of Undersecretary Fara. All of the missing children's parents are there, including KB's moms, Neel's parents, and Wendle, Wim's father, who saw the kids take off in the starship.
A safety droid arrives from the mysterious Supervisor. Because the kids went outside the Barrier, the Supervisor is refusing contact the Republic. The parents understandably cause an uproar, demanding to see the Supervisor.
Back in Port Borgo, Jod Na Nawood successfully helps the kids, Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB, escape their prison cell. Fern is wary of Jod despite Wim's excitement to meet a real "Jedi." Jod says it was no use freeing himself from a jail cell if he didn't have a ship, as he couldn't get out of the port without one. Wim is all about this new Jedi friend of theirs, and Jod is being the perfect Force user he needs to be.
In a moment when Jod is away, the kids bicker about whether or not to trust this guy. He comes back, having beaten up a person for their blaster, and the group sneaks out into the crowd where it's easier to hide.
They make their way through and hop on a ferry back to their ship, the Onyx Cinder. Fern is seriously doubting how easy all of this is. When they get back to the ship, Jod wants to take them to an expert on star maps to help the kids find their home.
However, the kids are adamant to not leave their droid, SM-33, behind. He came with the ship and knows it better than anyone there. Fern calls him out saying, "I thought the Jedi never left a man behind," cornering Jod. Wim throws his full belief that Jod can do anything with the Force! Jod finally relents, telling the kids to stay where it's safe on the ship.
As Jod moves through the crowd, an announcement goes up that Captain Silvo from episode one has escaped from the brig, confirming that Jod was the captain in the opening episode. He gets to a droid hub and finds SM-33 and the rat that lives in his eyehole.
As he's trying to free the droid, he's found by an old crewmate named Benjar Pranic. Apparently, this guy doesn't realize everyone is looking to recapture "Silvo" and wants to have tea with him. Jod is trying to leave when Benjar says he should report the Force user to Brutus, the new captain. Jod freezes and needs to kill Benjar.
Meanwhile, the kids are still debating whether or not Jod is a Force user. Fern brings up he could be using magnets, a nice callback to Obi-Wan Kenobi's Haja Estree who pretended to be a Jedi with magnets. Suddenly, there's blaster fire outside! Jod is racing back in a ferry, weaving in and out as he's chased by other ferries with pirates in spacesuits after him!
He dumps SM-33 onto their ship, jumps into the pilot chair, and punches the Onyx Cinder into flight! Oh no! They're trapped on a fuel line. Jod starts spinning the ship to snap the line as Brutus realizes he's escaping in the ship. Brutus calls for the canons to fire upon the vessel! Jod hits the hyperdrive, snapping the line! The massive wire flings back, crashing into Port Borgo.
In the safety of hyperspace, KB powers SM-33 back up. Jod makes the kids food and treats the droid as a servant. As Jod searches the captain's quarters for new clothes, weapons, and whatever he can find, SM-33 corners him, saying he's not going to take orders from Jod.
As they eat, the kids wonder if there really is treasure on their homeworld. Neel mentions it could be part of the supposed Great Work their planet is always working towards. Their parents are mostly analysts, and Wim realizes they research their money. A friendly reminder from episode 2: Their planet uses Republic credits that aren't around anymore. The pirates in that episode realize Wim's lunch money from his dad is a small fortune for the rest of the galaxy.
Wim hides his credits as Job returns, and all the kids head to bed. Except for KB, who doesn't think that he is actually a Jedi. She's calculated all the odds. He tells her that not everything can be calculated, and she has to learn not to trust her data visor:
She has to learn to trust her gut.
A few hours later, they come out of hyperspace to a moon. They walk out into the wilderness, and the kids wonder why they didn't land closer. Fern realizes he's trying to hide the ship. He admits this friend might stab them in the back.
Inside the compound, a woman named Kh'ymm sees Jod approaching with the children. She calls in a dispatch to a patrol for Jod's arrest. The woman will stall the group as long as she can. Kh'ymm calls him by the name "Crimson Jack," and welcomes them inside.
Kh'ymm is an owl woman, swooping in to meet the children. When the children mention they're from At Attin, Kh'ymm flies up to get a scroll. She reveals that their home has been very purposely hidden from the rest of the galaxy. Long ago, there were multiple worlds called the Jewels of the Old Republic which were hidden for their protection, but all were destroyed except for one, being At Attin.
Jod and Kh'ymm realize the children are the map. Her compound is an observatory, and she begins to ask them questions about their world. The kids have missed major moments in history, like the Galactic Civil War and Alderaan's destruction in A New Hope. Kh'ymm then takes off a metal symbol from Fern's backpack, running it by nebulas that could match the Barrier that surrounds their planet, and she narrows it down to thousands of worlds.
Jod then realizes she's stalling and that there are X-Wings inbound. Kh'ymm attacks Jod, screaming at the kids to run for it. He shoves her off, taking up the data chip from her search. He shoots her computer so she doesn't have the information.
All the kids run out to follow him, except for KB. She checks on Kh'ymm, who tells her to not trust her gut, to trust her head. She also lets KB know that she can call the owl woman at any time. With that safety net in place, KB hurries out after the rest of the group. X-wings are swooping in and out of the moon, searching for their ships in various craters.
The kids want answers out of Jod, refusing to get on the ship and even calling SM-33 for backup (reminder from episode 2, he recognizes Fern as the captain). He finally spills that he's just as lost and alone as the kids are. He also admits that he never actually said he was a Jedi. He makes a deal with the kids to get them home and maybe get a reward. KB demands that he work for them, which Jod agrees to.
They take off, with the X-wings swooping in and following. Only SM-33 was repairing the hyperdrive, so they needed to stall a bit of time. He puts Neel, of all people, in charge of flying the ship and evading the patrol. Taking Wim and Fern to go help him, Jod heads to work on the hyperdrive. KB, meanwhile, puts the data disk with the coordinates into the computer. Fern and Wim are put on the gunner positions to help keep the X-wings back from their escape. Wim is having the BEST time with this part of the adventure. KB gives the okay that their ship is clear, and they jump into hyperspace.
The X-wing pilot tells Kh'ymm he doesn't want to risk the children on the ship. She also says he doesn't believe her about where the kids are going.
This is where Skeleton Crew episode 3 "Very Interesting, As An Astrogration Problem" comes to an end.
