The themes and ideas in Star Wars have always inspired and pushed fans into action as they are a reflection of our own world. The franchise has always been political, something that George Lucas has said for decades. Some fans have chosen to ignore those words from the creator. Then, there are the fans who decide to take his words and turn it into action.
Project Fulcrum launched from the group Get Free as a way to help use Star Wars as a call to action to fight back against real world oppression. Using the recently completed live-action series, Andor, as their jumping off point, Project Fulcrum's main drive is Nemik's weekly manifesto. This is a newsletter that provides history about resistance movements. It teaches about the dangers of fascism and how to push back against imperialism still alive today in the U.S. You can also get a free link to the free Discord channel, which has an additional broadcast called Fulcrum Transmissions about how to organize both on a national level and in your own local areas.
“For many of us, Star Wars was our first introduction to the idea of resistance to fascism in fiction, even if we didn't realize it when watching as children," Get Free and Project Fulcrum's spokesperson Anthony Vidal Torres shared in a press release. "Andor's first season kicked that into overdrive, and many fans felt galvanized by its messages of freedom. Project Fulcrum aims to bridge the gap between the story of Andor and the real life history of freedom fighters and movements for equality and civil rights. Just like the Galactic Empire, the white supremacist faction in the U.S. has used laws, lies, and violence time and again to justify mass exploitation, segregation, and repression. Star Wars is a story of antifascist rebellion, and fans like us have a unique opportunity with Andor season 2 to intervene on the attacks on our freedoms and organize for real equality in a country not so far, far away."
Fulcrum is a fitting name, as it's the secret network of spies first coined in Star Wars Rebels with Ahsoka Tano. Joining her in this group would be Alexsandr Kallus, the ex-Imperial ISB agent who defected, and Andor's titular character, Cassian Andor.
