Star Wars' silence on The Mandalorian's 5 year anniversary leaves fans upset
Lucasfilm didn't have much to offer Mando fans at D23 in Brasil, but fans remained optimistic, as the show's all-important 5th anniversary was right around the corner.
Unfortunately, Star Wars' official accounts on Twitter and other social media sites maintained an eerie silence on Mando's birthday, which isn't what fans expected. This is a new low for Lucasfilm, with a history of missing the mark on big days, including May the Fourth. They've often failed to mark big occasions and deliver new glimpses at upcoming projects when fans expect them to. In this case, their silence is not only upsetting and shocking, but it's unsettling.
Some fans have begun to suspect a boycott of the show from Lucasfilm, and others took to social media to remind the Star Wars Official account about the anniversary. One fan tweeted, "Hey, - The Mandalorian's 5th anniversary is today. How about showing some love for the show that revitalized the franchise." Another said, "Now I feel stupid for wishing D+ a happy anniversary too- and SW didn't either?"
If anything, The Mandalorian has made Star Wars lucrative and relevant over the last 5 years, ensuring that generations of new fans, especially kids, are captivated by its magic. Merchandise has flown off shelves since the show premiered when Grogu made his debut. There's a Mando movie in production right now starring one of the biggest names in Hollywood. So, why doesn't Lucasfilm think this was a day worth celebrating? Are the rumors of a feud between Jon Favreau and higher-ups at Lucasfilm true?
Has The Mandalorian become a liability for the franchise as the focus shifts to sequel-era characters and upcoming movies? If a new era that doesn't depend heavily on Skywalkers is what the franchise is searching for, The Mandalorian covers those bases. Aside from Luke Skywalker's appearance here and there, The Mandalorian is capable of being its own thing, which is why fans don't understand why Lucasfilm is ignoring them. Are fans panicking for no reason, or does it seem like The Mandalorian has fallen out of favor with Disney and Lucasfilm?
Many fans noticed the person running Star Wars' official X account was active during the show's anniversary. Fondly known as "Swagmin," the Star Wars X admin replied to Andor and Skeleton Crew fans but ignored every tweet related to The Mandalorian's anniversary. This was made even worse by the silence of Disney+, as the show's anniversary is the same day as Disney+'s. The Mandalorian is Disney+'s flagship show. It helped to launch the platform, so the lack of acknowledgment from Star Wars and Disney+ isn't a good look. You can't blame fans for feeling left out. Star Wars needs to get their act together because there's no apparent reason why The Mandalorian's 5th anniversary should be ignored.
The Mandalorian competed against biggies like The Crown, Succession, Big Little Lies, Ozark, and Marvel shows such as Loki and WandaVision. It's been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and 15 Emmy Awards. I'd advise Mando fans to continue to shower love on their favorite show and characters. If Star Wars doesn't acknowledge them, it's their loss. Their focus has shifted to the big screen, and it'll take every ounce of love from Din and Grogu's fans to ensure The Mandalorian & Grogu is a blockbuster. Perhaps box office success will push Star Wars and Disney+ to show their most-watched original series and its fans some respect again.
The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+.
