Skeleton Crew: Did you catch this homage to Pirates of the Caribbean
The latest Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, has pulled from many inspirations for its creation. From Amblin films to LucasArts video games like the Monkey Island franchise, there is no shortage of Easter eggs within the series. One in particular in episode two paid homage to a beloved ride at Disney Parks.
Shared on the official Star Wars Twitter account, Sound Designer David W. Collins discusses the homage caught by a fan online. In episode two, “Way, Way Out Past the Barrier,” the four child protagonists are captured by pirates, played by Fred Tatasciore and Jaleel White, and thrown into the brig. As the keys to the cell are hung up, a familiar whistling can be heard in the distance for anyone familiar with the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney Parks.
“That is a really great catch,” Collins confirms. “I am guilty of whistling on microphone. We were all looking at that scene together, and I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we just did an homage to Pirates of the Caribbean?’ Port Borgo really reminded me of Tortoga from Pirates of the Caribbean which is a movie that I just really loved.’ He then whistles the familiar tune of the pirates in the ride trying to call over the dog with the keys.
It was a hit with the showrunners as Collins says, “Jon Watts and Chris Ford loved it. And I was just, so happy that we got to put that in the mix. That’s a nice homage, and I’m glad you liked it.”
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Is Full of Mystery and Adventure
Skeleton Crew has a near-perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at a 95% from critics. It holds the same audience score as Andor, both at 87%. The series has been met with rave reviews, especially for the character of Neel, played by Robert Timothy Smith, who has garnered a fan group called the “Neel Nation” online.
The series follows four kids named Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel as they accidentally stumble upon a starship that whisks them across the galaxy from their supposedly peaceful world of At Attin. However, not everything is as it seems on their planet. The children discover it’s supposedly a legendary world of treasure catching the eye of a group of pirates, including Captain Brutus (Tatasciore) and Vane from The Mandalorian’s third season, again played by Marti Matulis. They aren’t facing these troubles alone as the kids meet the Force user scoundrel Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), who goes by many names, and the droid first mate SM-33 (Nick Frost). Together, the group tries to help the children return home.
