Since Irvin Kirshner directed The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, many creators have stepped into the director's chair to work on the franchise. From Kirshner to Gareth Edwards to the late Carl Weathers, the list has been vast and brought their unique style and vision. Now, the latest series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, has a slew of talented directors ready to take on the mantle.
Showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have assembled a unique lineup. Watts himself comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed the recently released Spider-Man trilogy. Other directors who have signed are Bryce Dallas Howard, Lee Issac Chung, David Lowery, Jack Schreier, Daniel Kwan, and Daniel Scheinert, all of whom are slated to direct an episode.
The Daniels are coming off their work Everything Everywhere All at Once, which took him best picture two years ago at the Academy Awards. Both Howard and Chung have directed episodes of Star Wars in the past, with both working on The Mandalorian. Howard also directed an episode of The Book of Boba Fett series as well.
In an interview with Empire Online, Howard, the daughter of director Ron Howard, spoke of the opportunity to work with Watts and Ford. "I’ve known these guys — and Ford — for literally over 20 years. Watts has a playbill from something that I directed in college," she said.
Howard's upcoming episode will mark her fifth episode she is directing in the franchise. She also was the voice of Yaddle in the Tales of the Jedi animated series.
The crew of directors, like the franchise itself, represents a diverse group of people. That can benefit the series. Every episode of The Mandalorian has its own unique style and strongly represents who is at the helm behind the camera.
Director David Lowery is no stranger to Disney projects. He directed the remake of Pete's Dragon in 2016 and the Disney Plus film Peter Pan and Wendy, which was released in 2023. Jack Schreier has worked mainly in television but is the director of the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts, which is slated for release in 2025.
In the same Empire interview, Watts commented on the group of filmmakers. "We wanted directors who would be able to show Star Wars from a new perspective while bringing their own unique storytelling point of view.
Empire also revealed two new images for the upcoming series, including a new look at the droid SM-33 that Nick Frost voices.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is scheduled for release on Disney+ on December 3rd, just in time for the holidays.
