February rolls on, with another new series kicking off this week! While there aren't many titles out, it's been a fun month with each week has a new series kicking off. This edition is no different as The High Republic sets up its final bow. The Ahsoka adaptation is here too.
This Week in Star Wars Comics it's The High Republic - Fear of the Jedi #1 and Ahsoka #8
The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi #1
What scares the Jedi? The final run of The High Republic will tackle that question. The war against the Nihil, their Force-eating Nameless, and the world-consuming Blight intensify as the Jedi and the Republic are spread thin. Joining the fight is Master Kelnacca from The Acolyte, so I'm happy to see more of his story.
Jedi Master Keeve Trennis is on the frontline, and her story is the one I'm most interested in. We have known before The High Republic even started that Keeve Trennis was going to become one of the Lost Twenty, the bust of Jedi Masters who have left the Order that we see in the prequel trilogy. However, we don't know how and why she left, and I'm looking forward to hearing about it in this final comic run.
The High Republic - Fear of the Jedi #1 is written by Cavan Scott, the illustrator is Marika Cresta, and the cover artist is Phil Noto.
Ahsoka #8
I feel bad sometimes for being so down on the Ahsoka adaptation. Anyone who works on these projects puts their talent into every single issue. Their work shouldn't be overlooked because it's still a labor of love.
However, as we have talked about before, the adaptations lately don't feel like they're worth the cost. These adaptations used to have deleted scenes, new material, or at least gave us more of the internal thoughts of the characters. It's one of the reasons The Rise of Skywalker adaptation that is out next week is generating buzz. We're finally getting it after a many-year delay thanks to the COVID pandemic, and it was confirmed years ago there would be extra content not in the film.
The last few adaptations (minus the Star Wars: Visions manga adaptation since it's not Marvel) haven't added anything new or exciting. It's just the episode in comic form. I was listening to my buds on the Star Wars Splash Pages podcast, which covers the new comics that come out each week. In one episode, they coverage for an issue of Ahsoka was, "Have you watched the episode? Then you have read the comic!" Then, they moved on to the next book.
That's not fair to Ahsoka #8 writer Rodney Barnes, illustrator Georges Jeanty, and the cover artist David Nakayama. They put talent and hard work into these adaptations. I hope in the future, the higher ups let them add in extra content once again.
That's it for This Week in Star Wars Comics! See you in the splash pages!
