Star Wars: The Old Republic Expansion Details Leaked Ahead of E3

Star Wars fans have plenty of reason to be excited about this year’s E3 convention, which kicks off tomorrow. But it’s not just because of the anticipated reveal of the first gameplay trailer of Star Wars Battlefront, which is sure to rock the Internet.

Although it’s not the headlined event, Star Wars: The Old Republic will also get some time in the spotlight, as BioWare is set to announce a new expansion.

But it appears the company doesn’t have the same security measures as Battlefront makers EA or Dice, as several leaked details about the expansion, named Knights of the Fallen Empire, were published on the game’s official website Saturday before being taken down.

The information confirms the expansion’s release date as Oct. 27, although people who subscribe between July 31 and Oct. 19 will receive access a week early (the expansion will be free to all subscribers.) From the leaked release, it sounds like only players level 60 and above will be able to play the expansion.

Here’s a synopsis of the storyline:

"“A man can have anything… If he’s willing to sacrifice everything. Step into an epic story-driven adventure as your character becomes The Outlander, a veteran of the Great Galactic War. A third faction threatens the galaxy as we know it, and your choices will determine the fate of both the Sith Empire and Galactic Republic. Knights of the Fallen Empire includes the first nine chapters, fueled by BioWare-style cinematic storytelling, that kicks off a new player-driven story arc that puts you at the center of a conflict where your choices have impact on outcomes including unexpected twists and betrayals. Choose your path…join or betray companions, old and new…and shape the future of the entire galaxy as well as your own. Best of all, this is only the beginning…”"

The post reportedly listed a total of 16 chapters in the expansion that will be released over time, with the first nine chapters available at launch time.

It’s being speculated that this expansion will activate a third faction called the Outlanders, in addition to the traditional Galactic Republic and Sith Empire factions. The player may be able to join this faction and perhaps abandon the other factions once he or she reaches level 60. The release says that there will be special missions for all eight character classes.

Several character names were also shown as part of the post, hinting at their alliances:

  • Arcann, “The Dark Prince”
  • Valkorian, “The Immortal Emperor”
  • Lana Beniko, “The Dark Advisor”
  • Vaylin, “The Remorseless Prodigy”
  • Koth Vortena, “The Exiled General”
  • Senya, “The Vengeful Enforcer”
  • HK-55, “The Loyal Bodyguard”

Also igniting excitement is the line in the synopsis that says “join or betray your companions,” leading some to guess that you can turn on your squadmates and kill them.

The game’s official Twitter account also tweeted out this image showing twins, who are also featured on another official teaser image.

There are also some bonuses for subscribers that will be made available ahead of the release date. Players can gain access to the character of Niko Okarr, a smuggler featured in an early cinematic trailer back in 2011, as well as some of his gear. You can also pick up an Old Republic Swoop Bike a week before the expansion’s launch.

Finally, there are multiple images linked in the post, and while the links are inactive now, the actual text lists a place called “Bothawui” along with a “Skyscraper City” and “Skytroops.” Bothawui may be a new planet that features a skyscraper-covered surface similar to Coruscant.

It looks like this new expansion will introduce the so-called “Outlander” faction as a third figure in the fight between the Republic and the Sith in order to shake things up. The new gameplay element could also solve some of The Old Republic‘s reported problems with balancing the factions’ various attributes among the player population.

Stay tuned for more information about the game during EA’s announcement tomorrow at 4 p.m. EST.
