On Friday, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that Star Wars star Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018.

Our beloved Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the original and sequel Star Wars trilogies, will be honored in a big way in 2018. On Thursday, June 22, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that in 2018, Hamill will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On the Walk of Fame, Hamill joins other Star Wars celebrities including his former co-star, Harrison Ford (Han Solo).

The process of nominating a celebrity to receive a star on the Walk of Fame is a rigorous one. Said celebrity’s nominators must first submit a photo, a bio and the qualifications of the nominee to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. In addition, the nominators must produce “a list of [the nominee’s] contributions to the community and civic-oriented participation.” Finally, “a letter of agreement” must be obtained from the nominee or their manager(s). Once a celebrity is granted a star, they have two years to set the date for their star ceremony.

There is an added complication for nominating celebrities who recently passed away. Stars cannot be posthumously awarded to a celebrity until five years have passed since that celebrity’s death. That means Carrie Fisher, who portrayed Leia in Star Wars and who passed away in December 2016, will not receive a star until at least 2021.

Considering the long and multi-step process it takes for a celebrity to get their star on the Walk of Fame, it is truly a thing to celebrate that Hamill finally got his. We here at Dork Side extend our congratulations to our favorite farmboy Jedi on his amazing career and charity work which likely guaranteed his win.
