A clip from Star Wars Rebels season three premiered on this week’s episode of The Star Wars Show, giving us a glimpse at Ezra and Sabine’s new character designs.
Star Wars Rebels director Dave Filoni dropped by The Star Wars Show this week to give viewers an exclusive sneak peek at the new season ahead of Saturday’s panel at Star Wars Celebration. But what the clip really gave us was a taste of the surprising new awesomeness of Jedi-in-training, Ezra Bridger.
Ezra is all grown up in season three, with a new haircut, an extra couple of inches, and a fresh new green lightsaber. We have no idea how he got the latter, or how much time has passed since the finale of season two. But every part of his new look adds up to one thing: this is a much sober, serious Ezra with fighting skills which can only be called “most impressive.”

More telling is the quick quip Sabine makes about Ezra response to Hondo Ohnaka asking, “Is that really Ezra?” “Most of the time,” she says. It seems there are times when Ezra is not even himself anymore. It’s clear from his more adult stature he’s grown out of his childhood innocence, but there are probably emotional scars beneath the surface, too: anger at Darth Maul for blinding his master, Kanan Jarrus, anger at Ahsoka Tano’s presumed death, and the burden of struggling against the dark side growing ever stronger as he himself becomes more powerful in the Force.
But he’s not the only one who’s changed. Sabine’s armor has altered slightly with different coloring on the shoulder pauldrons. Her hair is likely different as well, as it changed from season one to season two. We know from an interview io9 had with Dave Filoni, the young Mandalorian is going to have a more main character status role in season three alongside Ezra, so chances are she carries her own bag of scars and charged emotions.
