Original Trilogy Heroes Spotted In Rogue One Celebration Reel

Three original trilogy heroes (one of them appeared in the prequels but was first mentioned in A New Hope) have been spotted in the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sizzle reel.

Three heroes from the original trilogy (one of them technically only appeared in the prequel trilogy, but was first mentioned in A New Hope) have been spotted in the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story behind the scenes sizzle reel debuted at Star Wars Celebration Europe.

They aren’t the heroes you might expect, however. There’s no Princess Leia or Wedge Antilles floating around in the background (if they are, no one has discovered them yet). Rather, it’s the leaders of the Rebel Alliance who have roles in Rogue One: Senator Mon Mothma, General Jan Dodonna, and a man who looks very much like Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan.

If you look closely at the photo below, you can clearly see Mon and Jan, with Mon fore towards Gareth Edwards and the camera, and Dodonna back on the opposite side of the table.

Bail is behind the other camera in the background, next to Jan. His face, though blurry, is more visible in the next frame.

The man’s skin tone, the pattern of his facial hair, and the widow’s peak of his hairline looks very similar, even at a blurry focus, to Jimmy Smits’s Bail Organa from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

How big of a role the triumvirate of Alliance leadership have in Rogue One is obviously impossible to discern by this brief look at them in the sizzle reel alone. We know from the first Rogue One teaser trailer Mon has a few lines, at least. I love Jimmy Smits as Bail, so I hope he gets more than a few seconds of screen time. But it’s Jan Dodonna who may be the most involved with the Rogue One team, given his position in the military.

It’s exciting to see threads from past Star Wars films in Rogue One. It makes the Star Wars universe feel connected and organized, having the appropriate characters in the right places at the right times. I just hope we will see Mon, Jan, and Bail acting as more than mission assigners in Rogue One. Bail, especially, needs some cool moments to make up for his being destroyed along with his home planet in A New Hope.
