Actor Adam Driver, who plays Kyo Ren in the new Star Wars trilogy, wants to clear the air about a statement he made, comparing Star Wars: Episode VIII to Empire Strikes Back…

Adam Driver was recently interviewed by website Collider, and talked about Star Wars: The force Awakens, as well as 2017’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. During that interview, Driver seemed to make a comparison between Episode VIII and Empire Strikes Back, however, in a new interview with website Vanity Fair, Driver wanted to clear up some misgivings about that statement.

Here’s Driver’s original quote with Collider:

"“It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go “oooh, it’s dark” but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear.”"

And here’s what Driver had to say about that quote, to Vanity Fair:

"“No, no, and that’s not even what I said. What I said was the tone of it was different, I didn’t say that it was gonna be in the vein of [it]—I was using it as an example, so poor example. Next time I should say—I’m trying to think of another sequel to a movie that’s good. When I read the script, it was not what I expected, in the best of ways.”"

As you can imagine, Driver’s original quote with Collider, instantly hit the internet and made huge waves among the Star Wars fanbase. One of the few complaints that Star Wars fans had regarding Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was that it resembled A New Hope a little too much in both scope and tone. This is perhaps why Driver’s comments on Episode VIII, caught fire so fast.

So there you have it, Star Wars: Episode VIII isn’t going to be like Empire Strikes Back, according to Adam Driver, but rather, it will just be a different film that The Force Awakens. There, all cleared up now? Good.
